    Keeping Track of Eggs

I struggled for years to keep track of which eggs were the oldest and use them first, and finally having hit on a simple solution, I wanted to share it. I put a piece of Scotch tape on the end of an egg carton to create a "plastic-y" area, then write the date on it with a wet erase marker...

    Duck Needed -- Sacramento Area

After about two years without incident, a raccoon found a weak spot in what I thought was a secure pen and slaughtered four out of our five ducks. The survivor, a male black East Indies, has severe gashes on his head and bill and was trembling when I found him, but he seemed pretty strong...

Is this normal for Black East Indies?

And will not all females do this?

Is this normal for Black East Indies?

Do the males not do that? I think he's the same age. Or maybe he'll go bald.

Is this normal for Black East Indies?

I think this female is about a year and a half or two years old. She came with a male whose coloring has remained dark, but over the last few months she has ended up with a lot of white feathers. Is this normal for the breed?

Why are my ducks losing feathers?

Wow, this was a while ago. I think they were just moving on to the next coat of feathers though, since they all seemed to do it and the new feathers came in fine. There was never any evidence of bugs.

    Broken Leg?

Thanks, I will separate her for now. Also, she was one of only two ducklings that hatched, and the other died the first day. This one had problems with angel wing, which I was able to correct with tape, but I always thought one of her legs was turned in a little too much, and I've wondered if...

    Broken Leg?

I have a little BEI that I thought was sick when I noticed her spending a lot of time by herself lying on the grass while the other ducks were foraging. The next day I noticed that she was limping badly, and I assume that's what the problem is since she's eating normally and looks otherwise...

    Duck Wanted, N CA

I have a friend whose parents are looking for an adult duck -- following is her email. If you know of one, please let me know. *** My parents gave one of their male ducks away. It was just too mean. The remaining duck is sooooo VERY sad-- we are afraid it might die of heartbreak. They are...

    Angel Wing

I noticed that one of my ducks had angel wing too and got some very good advice here. The first was a link to this video, which made it so much clearer how to do the taping: http://www.phillipsmediaservices.com/anglewing56k.wmv Here's a picture of my duck's taped wing...

my ducks are out in the POURING rain, will they be ok?

My ducks love the rain. The ONE time I ever saw them go into their house voluntarily was when it started to thunder and hail, and I watched them all run across the yard and into their little house, where I could see them watching out the windows until it stopped.

    Angel Wing Continued?

The feather has been getting funkier and funkier over the last week I would say. It seems to look worse as it grows. Thanks, Horsefly. We actually picked up a pair of Black East Indies from someone who needed to find homes (they had about 20) and the female managed to hatch this one and one...

    Angel Wing Continued?

From what I can tell without pinning her down to really get a close look, it's just bent in the shaft, although when I tuck the end of her wing up and under, it hides the problem. It just doesn't stay that way. Oh well, we'll see what happens when she (or he?) moults. Do you have any idea...
