That's true - I'll have to do some research on ventilation, in the past we've just stuck a window in the wall away from the wind. Would I be able to make a design & post it here for critiques? (Also I live in Victoria, Australia)
We can get free bricks from our builders, they're a bit broken but most are whole. I was thinking of building a chook coop where the bottom and maybe 60cm or so up is fully brick - to keep out mice, rats, foxes, etc - and then having wood for the coop and mesh for the run. Wood for the coop...
No, they didn't. Lol. That's wolves. Dogs are domesticated.
Wild animals also have much shorter lifespans and usually die painfully from preventable illness or injury. No responsible pet owner wants that for their animal.
Update: chick has started developing bald spots. (And is also still not fluffy, so it'd be pretty unlikely it's dried yolk, since it's been...4 or 5 days now?) Should I call the vet & get an opinion? Squid (chick's name) is as active as the other chicks, and hasn't shown any signs of illness...
This chick hatched yesterday. Basic info: dad is silkie, mum is probably silkie (might be australorp x but it'd be weird if a australorp hatched such a small chick). Chick is half the size of the other chicks, not fluffy and has an enormous head. Photos attached of body and feather type, as well...
I saw a lady dye her pigeon pink with food dye. She spritzed it on (diluted). I would do that - I've spritzed my silkies with water to keep them cool and they were fine, which eliminated the worry of stressing chickens some other folks had.
Nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with your...
My two are definitely cross breds then! They were born on the 5th and look mostly like that photo. I'm excited to see what they look like, although I'm not sure if I'll be able to keep them if they're roosters.
They've got pink skin but 5 toes. Their mum could be Australorp x Leghorn. One of the babies is splash too so that would make sense. What age would you expect to know for sure they're xs?
Perhaps prices are higher because we don't have rare breeds? There are only around 8 breeds of chickens to choose from around here. Prices get really high if you want show quality birds. I saw day old Silkie chicks being sold for $40 because parents won some show or another.
