    Need some help with wording

So we are having some fantastic success getting our town ordinance changed and are actually working together. Here is a sticking point....We need some wording help. We want to somehow word the ordinance to say that if you do not have a privacy fence that you have to keep your chickens a...

    Winterizing

Glad to hear that I really don't need any type of heat lamps. I use the sand in my coop and run. We have recently covered the top of the entire run with secured tarps and 3 of the sides are blocked so I'm guessing I don't need to add any heat to the mix. I haven't had any sickness issues thus...

    Treats that are NOT treats

My chickens LOVE plain cooked pasta....it's hilarious watching them eat it. Running around the yard with big strings of spaghetti hanging out of their beaks...funny.

Had to put a chicken down this morning....

It did seem to go back in but after several days of rest and being kept away from the others, she continued to decline. I couldn't stand to see her suffer.

Had to put a chicken down this morning....

We had to put one of our chickens down this morning. This is a first for me. This is our first year having chickens. She had a prolapse...I soaked her butt in warm water, lubed her up and even pulled part of an egg membrane out. She was suffering. I hated to have to do it but.....My husband...

    Protecting my garden???

I've started a compost pile for them and they seem to enjoy it. I have several corners of the yard where there is sand and they take dust baths all the time. I guess I will just have to be a little more creative.

    Protecting my garden???

Ugh...I guess I'm going to have to improvise. Hubby said he could raise the fence...or rather put chicken wire up higher. It just is a pain in the butt for me to get in and weed. Oh well....

    Protecting my garden???

Probably a stupid question, but is there anything I can do to keep my girls from getting in my garden?? I have a smaller fence that keeps my dogs out but the birds can fly into it pretty easy. When I'm outside with them, they don't get into it. It's when I leave them to their own devices that...

are your dogs and chicken friends

My Shih Tzu LOVES my chickens. I think she thinks she is one of them. lol My littlest Chihuahua can't stand them and I have to watch him because he will chase them. My Chi is only about 4lbs but thinks he's a brute. lol Here is one of their "bonding" moments. Lola thinks she's part of the...

    Do chickens know their breed?

Mine are the same way...I have 4 EE and they pretty much hang out all together. I have 6 red sex links that all hang together. Funny how that works. I will say that I have 3 Chihuahuas and 2 other kinds of dogs and the Chihuahuas prefer each other to the others.

    Changed nesting boxes

I took the old boxes out for several weeks and they had no boxes in there. They actually have 2 roosting bars in the coop. I put these new boxes back in yesterday and checked this morning, no poop in the boxes and no evidence they were sleeping in the new ones. I would rate this a success...

What did your chickens do today?

Mine decided to fly over my little fence around my garden and take a dust bath on top of my peas. Ugh...lol. This is the first time they have decided to jump into the garden. I guess there wasn't enough supervision today....I did discover they LOVE the dried mealworms. Every time I walked...

    Changed nesting boxes

I took my old nesting boxes out because my girls were sleeping/pooping in them. They aren't laying yet so I didn't want them to get used to doing that. I decided to put kitty litter containers and a bucket for their nesting boxes. They are so much better and seem to be more compact. Hoping...

    sand in a coop???

I just got chickens this year and also use sand in my coop/run. I let my girls out to range in the yard when we are home. After using pine shavings and then switching to sand, sand is the way to go.
