    Birds in the Hen House!

Thanks to all! We were afraid that now that winter is coming and the rain/wind nastys are here we would have to immediately take care of this problem with new wire. What good news to find out we don't! Can't really blame the little birdies- we have had a Nor'easter camped on top of us for...

    Birds in the Hen House!

Hi All, After a quiet and healthy summer with our little flock of Golden Comets and Guinea hens had a big surprise the last couple of mornings. Going out with their morning feeding, in the pouring rain- we put the extra food goodies in the coop. On opening the door, it seemed like there was a...

What did you have to learn the hard way? (management stuff)

I learned that chickens CAN fly- no matter what you read or hear. The don't soar like an eagle but all that flapping will easily get them over a pretty high fence. Very quickly too.

What is the best laying breed of large brown eggs?

Oh I forgot to add- the Golden Comets lay large brown eggs and do not have feathered feet. Joan and the Golden Girls

What is the best laying breed of large brown eggs?

Quote: ###### I've had Golden Comets since Feb. and through cold, wet, ice, snow and even now- well into the molt, the girls are still producing an egg each a day. In the cold months, they have a light in their coop so that helps keep them warm and laying.

    Do Roosters Molt Too?

I've read alot about layers molting so I'm all prepared for that to happen. But do roosters molt as well? Poor Rudy is missing his beautiful tail feathers. He will do a shake- shake and feathers fly around him. Is this normal? Or is it something missing in his diet? He seems to feel fine...

Average Life Span of a Chicken/Rooster?

I'm still a bit stunned to learn about chicken/rooster longevity. Figure I am 69 years old and my chickens may darn well out live me! Hadn't figured on that. I have two dogs (Dachshunds) and they are 9 and 10 so I may make the rest of their life span. The chickens are less than 2 yrs old, the...

Average Life Span of a Chicken/Rooster?

I recently read that a rooster in good health can live for 15 to 20 years and a chicken for 8-12 years. I had no idea they were that long lived! Can this be true? I'm sure for a chicken they wouldn't be laying all that time but this seems like an excessive estimate even barring anything...

New Clucks from Maryland's Easten Shore

Hello Everyone! My name is Joan and I live on a small farm in Maryland. I was looking for some info about my small flock and found your site. It looked so helpful and full of useful stuff, thought I would join up and meet all the chicken keepers. My flock is pretty small, eight hens (Golden...
