So we clipped the escapee's wings yesterday and somehow she managed to get out AGAIN!
.. using the little covered area I built for the little chicks as a spring board!
Thing is, she doesn't even know where she wants to go when out.
Oh wait, she does know: back in!
There is one chicken which can fly really high and manages to escape all the time. No other chickens are able too (the fence is 2m high (6.5 feet) so she's got to be admired too. Is there a Guinness Book of Records for highest flying chicken?
This morning she was out wandering in the flower and...
So.... we got 2 chicks out of 9 eggs. It was always a bit of a gamble with a limping rooster and older hens. But I am glad to say that we welcome Willow & Wubbo to our flock 😇
Thank you, that really helped. We'll put water in mini-drinkers out in front of the nest tomorrow morning and keep our fingers crossed for the remaining eggs. Today is Day 22, so maybe everyone is just later than usual. Sadly, patience is not my virtue 😄
I am slightly confused about the hatching times: usually they hatch on day 21, but if a broody stays for another 72 hours on unhatched eggs, that would than be closer to 25 days. Can it really be this far apart?
I posted yesterday morning that my broody was on day 21 (possibly) and nothing had...
Quick update: when I refilled her water, I managed to have a sneak peek in the broody coop and there was one egg empty and broken in half. She was also muttering softly and sat tight on the other eggs.
I didn't see any movement just yet, but I guess the broken egg is a good sign! :thumbsup
Hi all
we have a broody sitting on eggs and today is (possibly) day 21, but there is no sign of hatching whatsoever and she also moved the eggs slightly since yesterday.
It was always going to be a guess because our rooster limps, but still manages to do his job :-) with most girls. Then we...
Absolutely adorable!
My Light Sussex girl has only been sitting on eggs for 3 days but I already can't wait to see what we might get. The father is a cream legbar and has fathered 13 chicks, but they were possibly all with black Daisybell chickens and none turned out white. They all lay green...
Hi there
48 hours ago I moved my broody to a separate coop and put eggs under her.
When I came home today she was off the nest and trying to get to her old coop. We caught her and put her back in the broody coop and she walked straight to her eggs again.
I don't know for how long she has been...
As a budding biologist I think that chickens behave the same way to us as they would to other chickens, which includes preferring certain individuals over others. So, yes your chicken seems to prefer you over other individuals whether they be members of the flock or other humans. Chickens can...
Quick update on Harvey the limping rooster: he still limps a little, but other than that, seems to be fine. He even manages to 'do his job' with the girls. Maybe because of an injury he had when he was young, he now has arthritis, but thankfully he seems quite happy.
@SamLockwood Thank you for your story. It helps to know that other chickens had similar injuries and gotten through it in time. Harvey, my gentle and beloved rooster seems a lot better now after around 3,5 - 4 weeks and is out with the flock again. Although we have kept him in his...
