Absolutely not. I hate those month or so times when I can't get fresh eggs. I try not to buy any store bought at all unless I can't help it.
I used to work in a commercial egg laying operation. This was the battery cage system and I won't even go into the horrors of that time in my life. It...
Oh definitely. I am usually the one who does the butchering, because my husband gets too attached to them. I haven't had Cornish X's before, but I have had plenty of experience in both chicken and rabbit processing. My daughter usually helps, but she can't do the killing, so that is part of my...
I have been removing their food at night since they were maybe 5 weeks old? I can't remember exactly. They also have a lot of area to forage in so I am saving a bit of money that way. They do have access to food, but they also have access to plenty of grass and insects. I was wondering if I...
DING DING DING! Donrae hit it on the nose. The hen is starting to get the white feathers on her neck and head. I just wish there were pictures out there somewhere of the Asian black roos. Once mine gets full grown I'll see if I can post pictures for others!
You have a good point. My biggest problem is that my husband lets them out every morning and he is starting to hate the thought of them being meat. :D I suppose it would be harder to do it they hung around for a lot longer.
I appreciate the thoughts of free range too. I was wondering if I was...
True, I didn't think about that. As far as the huge breasts, that is always a plus, but I think (it may all be in my head) but the smaller birds seem to taste better even if they don't have as much meat.
I appreciate everyone's answers, you have all been very helpful! I'm not sure I will raise cornish crosses again, they are ridiculously fast growers, but I think I would rather have a dual purpose breed instead. These things are like frankenchickens.
Oh thanks! This one will be butchered by 7-8 weeks and he is HUGE already. He looks like a turkey. I could probably do it now without waiting, but I would prefer to butcher them all at one time.
Well I am sure you CAN eat them, but one of the six I bought is definitely a roo. I am wondering if he is going to be tough like most roosters are. Anyone with experience on the taste/toughness of these roos?
I wish the link had photos of the roosters. The red in them isn't something that is only red at first glance, it's really hard to miss no matter how the light hits them. I'll have to wait and see what the pullet looks like when she gets her next set of feathers in. She doesn't have any sheen to...
All of them were identical when I bought them, their heads completely black except under the neck and under the belly. Not a bit of white on the heads of any of them. The only real difference was the legs when they were chicks. Some had greenish black legs other had the same greenish black with...
I have been reading these forums for a while since they always show up in any google image search of chickens but I just now joined so I could actually get in on the conversations.
I have had my backyard flock for 3 years now, but I have had plenty of chickens, ducks, geese, guineas, and other...
