Just came across this post while do a search for something else. There isn't anything wrong with the bird. The black mold looking stuff on her tail is referred to by breeders of buffs as "smut" or "peppering". It is excess black pigment in the feather. In chicks you may see little dots on their...
Andrew,
Is it that it won't read anything less than 80% or is it that you have too much actual humidity in your incubator? If it is the first I would say your electronics are wacked (sorry:-( if it is the second, just keep running incubator it will eventually drop down as water vapor escapes...
I had similar trouble calibrating my Janoel. I finally resorted to using a digital thermometer used for checking body temp. I purchased a quick read that is accurate to .2 degrees f. (Walgreens) I drilled a small hole (1/8-3/16 should work) in the side of the incubator that allowed me to insert...
Hi there,
I am a little late to this thread but need to ask a question relative to the Janoel 48. There have been some troubles here in the U.S. with counterfeit Janoel incubators being sold. I purchased mine via Amazon through a 3rd party seller. I had some trouble with my unit and contacted...
Try putting a big chunk of ice directly in the waterer to keep the water cool all day as it melts. I use watermelon as someone else stated.Cantalope too, anything with a high water contend to keep everybody hydrated.
I have to laugh at a couple of young buff pullets I hatched out of some eggs...
Hi there,
I am looking for a few day old black australorp chicks. Check every place around here (Vancouver area) and no luck. Willing to drive a reasonable distance to pick up.
Thanks,
Juley
I am looking for speckled Sussex day old chicks in the Washington/Oregon area. Will drive reasonable distance to pick up. Purebred only please. Willing to pay reasonable market price, please ignore $1 in price field as it had to be filled with an amount.
Thx,
Juley
Toughest little birds I have. My little girls have laid through 100+ weather and when it was down in the teens. Nothing really seems to bother them. Best hens I have. Easy keep, get along with everyone else in the coop (except for maybe that nasty little Wyandotte;-) and just do their job. Sweet...
Hi there,
I am looking for a quality breeder of Australorps. Lines with good conformation and utility. I'm not interested in SQ, just good solid stock that I can use to improve my flock for future generations. If you have or know of someone who might have birds that fit this bill I would love to...
Dear venerable chicken masters,
Does anyone out there have any theories as to why one of my pullets goes broody when the outdoor temps drop in the teens. The first time she had only been laying about 4 wks and I chalked it up to teenage hormones. That was fun, trying to cool her off without...
Thanks for the info. Think we're in good shape for making babies! Btw, the gigantic eggs the buff is laying are all single yolks. They have been running 90-105 gm. Think she is just trying to show all the other girls how tough she is. She is the same hen that flipped my 10 lb. roo on his back...
