Daydreams of chickens waddling around behind me in the garden, eating grubs and turning them into delicious eggs. Also, eating the scorpion problem around here.

After talking about wanting chickens for a few years, my handy friends chipped in and built me a coop for...
I added the wire to the top of the gate, and so far, it seems to have discouraged them. I will say that this fence is not complete, as the electric current is not hooked up yet and some other things. So, no free chicken dinner after that, hehehehehe. Good one though!
I know how discouraged you are. I was in the same spot about 4 weeks ago! So, bare minimum first, and add ons as you go. I have a plywood floor with some vent holes(covered in wire), covered by that vinyl on a roll from HD. So far,so good. And the plywood and frame were out in the rain for 2...
The quickest fix I can think of would be to tack a couple 1x1s or something to either edge of the door, maybe making a 1 foot extension and then tacking some chicken wire or a scrap of what you used for the fence on top of that. That way when they fly up to perch on the edge of the gate, they...
With a lot of help, our fence is complete around the coop. But these spoiled chickens just want to fly right out. The rooster seems to be the leader. Anyway, from what I have seen, they fly up to the top of the wooden gate and then off of that. I have not seen them land on the wire fencing. My...
We had a kingsnake for years and never saw a rodent. Then my neighbor purposely ran it over while it was sunning on her driveway. We had a huge rodent problem after that, and then the same stupid neighbor put out poison, which the rodents ate, and then it killed all of the owls in the...
I have learned that around this time of the year, these predators are feeding babies and hungry moms. I have had coyotes snatch my girls in the middle of the day. I don't think that coyotes would go inside of a barn, but, you never know. The coyotes around here are really used to humans, and...
So I have continued to keep the chickies locked up in the tractor, and have discovered the path that the coyote pack uses to go through our lower yard out to the neighborhood. They haven't come into the open part of our yard since they figured out the chicken are locked up, but they make eye...
So, yesterday I moved the chicken tractor nearby the site of the first attack. I thought I could get on the roof and watch (tractor is secure). I was standing in the yard chatting with my mom, and what do ya know? My dog comes tearing through the yard barking, I look over, and a coyote is about...
Zazous that is an amazing picture. I had not even considered that a possibility, until now. The reason there is not a nice big fence around my property is because I know that the coyotes will just dig under it. It's just a never-ending battle against nature, isn't it? I was able to round up the...
Thanks for your input! I discovered another chicken disappeared this morning! I think you are right on that it is a fox...and having kits would make them come for my chickens; good point. I made a trip to Home Depot for fencing and stuff to cover the top as well. Hopefully, I can get it all up...
I live in Austin, TX, in the city but an open part of the city. I was sitting on my porch reading while my 11 week old chickens were scratching around and laying down in the shade about 30 feet from me. They were nearby the fence line, which is just 3 strands of barbed wire, with a field on the...
