    Baby Chicks....how to set up

Yes, our current coop has heat if we need it. The run that is attached is not heated though. But there is a way to plug in a cord to add a heat lamp for them. Plus, by the time we would end up getting the chicks, it will be pretty warm out. Still need to fix up the run part of the coop so...

    Baby Chicks....how to set up

Good Morning, I used to have 3 chickens. They were older, got them in 2018. They have all since passed away, unfortunately, but my husband and I were thinking of getting some chicks to start a new flock. Since it's colder out we thought we would use our dog kennel (wire type) and maybe add...

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

Sounds like several people have had older hens laying unexpectedly. That's so cool. Bugs hasn't laid in a long time and now all of sudden....she starts laying...in winter...and she's still at it! LOL! I ate one of Maxine's eggs today, so Maxine has laid 9 eggs and Bugs has laid 7 eggs. I...

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

That's awesome! This week was the first time we've gotten an egg from her, and she's laid one four days in a row. I haven't checked today because they don't typically lay until afternoon time. This has made my day, I think I'm going to have an all day smile on my face. :D

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

HAHA! I just said it feels like a miracle in my last response. So funny. She's laid an egg for the last 4 days. I'll see if we get one today, but I am not expecting it to be a regular thing. Poor old girl has paid her way in life years ago, so I just appreciate the gift. :love

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

It's true. While my husband and my 2 adult "boys" are kind of clueless and don't really pay attention to the details, mostly because they didn't do any of the research that I've done, I DO know my chickens and recognize their eggs and who belongs to who. LOL! I feel like we've gotten an end...

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

See?? We did find that the shells are thinner, so it is totally possible that she is laying again. I don't expect it to be regular, even Henrietta isn't regular in laying, but she's layed an egg for 4 days in a row. LOL! I'll take what I can. This was just a starter/trial flock for us...

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

I mean, Henrietta's eggs wouldn't have changed both shape AND color that much, right? It just seems so strange that her eggs would have changed that much, that's why we think it's Bugs, which seems just as crazy. LOL!

    9-10yr. old hen laying?

Hello all, I have a question. I got 3 hens from some friends back in July. One of them, Bugs, a white leghorn is about 9-10 years old. The other chickens are a dark brahma, Henrietta, not sure of her age, but she's younger than the white one, but older than our other chicken, Maxine, who is a...

    Egg freshness in heat...

Thank you @jolly wattles and @Chickens :) I appreciate your replies so quickly. I accidentally cracked the shell to one of the eggs, not much, just a little, so I just scrambled it up and gave it to the dog in her dinner. I'll put the other one in the fridge. :)

    Egg freshness in heat...

Hello everyone, I am a new chicken mama. We have a chicken that keeps laying eggs under their loft, instead of in the nest. We cleaned out the area a couple of days ago, added pavers under the loft, and put a shallow bin under there for a dust bath, hoping to keep them from laying under there...

    JustRambling About My Chicken Journey

Last but not least, Meet Bugs. She was named by her previous owners. She is about 7yrs. old, and the oldest of the chickens. She no longer lays eggs, but we were told that she is the leader of the flock. She is a Leghorn. She's not sure whether she can trust us yet. Henrietta tends to...
