9-10yr. old hen laying?

Leghorns are the best layers in the world, especially production Leghorns, like Bugs. And the egg looks like a Leghorn egg. I really think Bugs pulled off a Christmas miracle and laid for you. It may be her last egg, or she may lay the random egg when least expected, but I doubt she will lay regularly again.

HAHA! I just said it feels like a miracle in my last response. So funny. She's laid an egg for the last 4 days. I'll see if we get one today, but I am not expecting it to be a regular thing. Poor old girl has paid her way in life years ago, so I just appreciate the gift.

That's awesome! This week was the first time we've gotten an egg from her, and she's laid one four days in a row. I haven't checked today because they don't typically lay until afternoon time. This has made my day, I think I'm going to have an all day smile on my face.

I'd sure be grinning, too, if my nine and ten-year old hens laid eggs.

My nine-year old SLW Lilith laid an egg a week last season, but I came to dread finding it in the nest because the shell was so thin, she usually crushed it getting out of the nest after she laid it, and there was a mess to clean up. Wyandottes are almost as prolific layers as Leghorns. My Speckled Sussex also are regular layers into old age. I consider old age to be seven or older.

Peep was 11 years old this last spring when she laid 11 eggs. She is now going on 12 years old so I'm looking forward to finding eggs from her again this coming spring.

I also got 2 eggs from a 9 year old hen a few weeks ago.

I think your long white egg is definitely from the Leghorn hen. Unusual for Leghorns but not impossible for sure! Congratulations.

She was 6 years old when I got the last chick from her. She outlived that daughter...
She lives in the old folks coop now and I protect her from the young roosters so she wouldn't have fertile eggs. But she has always been special to us since she is the 1st chick I ever hatched. Just didn't dream she would live this long.

Sounds like several people have had older hens laying unexpectedly. That's so cool. Bugs hasn't laid in a long time and now all of sudden....she starts laying...in winter...and she's still at it! LOL!

I ate one of Maxine's eggs today, so Maxine has laid 9 eggs and Bugs has laid 7 eggs. I think they might be having a competition. Maybe she heard me call her a freeloader.
