Hello all,
I have a question. I got 3 hens from some friends back in July. One of them, Bugs, a white leghorn is about 9-10 years old. The other chickens are a dark brahma, Henrietta, not sure of her age, but she's younger than the white one, but older than our other chicken, Maxine, who is a black sex link and around 2 or 3 years old. Here they are eating some oatmeal that I made for them:

We know which egg is Maxine's, she's the regular layer. Henrietta's (brahma) eggs are more round in shape and a lighter brown. For the past four days, we've been getting very elongated eggs that are a creamy white color. We haven't ever gotten eggs from Bugs and both her previous owners and we have assumed that she was retired and would be freeloading until the end of her life. ;) But is it possible that she decided to start laying again?? :hmm Take a look at these eggs and tell me what you think. In the picture below, you will see 2 eggs. The first one is from Maxine, the second one is from Henrietta:

As you can see, the one from Henrietta is more round and a little lighter in color. In the following picture, the first egg is once again, Maxine's, the second egg is very elongated and almost white in color. The lighting in the room doesn't really show the true color but trust me, it is like a cream color. This is the egg we think has come from Bugs. And definitely different from the eggs we've gotten from Henrietta. It's got to be Bugs, right??

We think she decided to start paying rent because we've been so kind giving them yummy treats like oatmeal, squash, and lately, mealworms! :jumpy Which seems to be their favorite! Bugs is our friendliest hen and she is always the first to come over to eat the treats. Maxine is the next, both in friendliness and eating the treats. Henrietta is the grumpy old lady that is suspicious of everyone and everything  and the last to eat the treats. What are your thoughts? :)

Sure, it's possible for an old girl to decide to pop out an occasional egg. However, it's not generally a sure thing that they will be able to do it on a regular basis, and if they do, the eggs may lack shell quality.

But, in the animal kingdom, I've found that there are always individuals who insist on breaking all the rules. So you won't hear me stubbornly insisting it's not possible.

Well it isn't really impossible, there are breeds such as the death layer that put out eggs till their life ends. Not sure if death layer make it to 9 or 10 yrs of age though
I mean, Henrietta's eggs wouldn't have changed both shape AND color that much, right? It just seems so strange that her eggs would have changed that much, that's why we think it's Bugs, which seems just as crazy. LOL!

See?? We did find that the shells are thinner, so it is totally possible that she is laying again. I don't expect it to be regular, even Henrietta isn't regular in laying, but she's layed an egg for 4 days in a row. LOL! I'll take what I can. This was just a starter/trial flock for us anyway. Mostly because my husband wasn't sure if he really even wanted to have chickens. This was pretty much MY little project. But he's actually really loving going out and enjoying their cute little personalities. LOL! I made a believer out of him.

I can tell who layed what in my flock and you know as well so no it isn't crazy. Now will you get consistency? Probably not but she may pop one out here and there, and for a hen that old that's great!

Leghorns are the best layers in the world, especially production Leghorns, like Bugs. And the egg looks like a Leghorn egg. I really think Bugs pulled off a Christmas miracle and laid for you. It may be her last egg, or she may lay the random egg when least expected, but I doubt she will lay regularly again.

It's true. While my husband and my 2 adult "boys" are kind of clueless and don't really pay attention to the details, mostly because they didn't do any of the research that I've done, I DO know my chickens and recognize their eggs and who belongs to who. LOL! I feel like we've gotten an end of the year miracle or something getting eggs from such an old girl. I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth though, I'll enjoy it while we can. :D
