    Protecting Sapling Roots

Has anyone had success creating a protective tree ring out of chicken wire? We had to stop free ranging our pullets this summer because they dug around and exposed the roots of most of the fruit trees in our young orchard, and killed at least one of them in the process. Would a homemade chicken...

Winter Water System for 100 Chickens in -40 with Wind Chill

Thank you, I'll have to look into those. Do you know how big of a container they can keep thawed? Right now in the summer heat our not quite mature flock is going through about 30 gallons a week. Even with the water intake reduction in winter I'm not looking forward to filling the containers in...

Winter Water System for 100 Chickens in -40 with Wind Chill

Good questions! We got here on the tail end of winter this year so I’m not sure how long those temps are generally maintained. I will have to do a little more research to figure it out. The coop will be insulated but the water needs to be in the covered run adjacent to it to reduce the moisture...

Winter Water System for 100 Chickens in -40 with Wind Chill

We considered a recirculating system but came to the conclusion that running a pump would be too expensive. And if it failed or we lost power we would have to deal with frozen pipes, frozen nipples, and up to 250 gallons of ice! I think a 55 gallon can for each flock will be our best solution...

Winter Water System for 100 Chickens in -40 with Wind Chill

I hadn’t considered insulating the container, that might help. The nipples really are the biggest concern. I’d like to refill as infrequently as possible!

Winter Water System for 100 Chickens in -40 with Wind Chill

Our family recently moved to an area of Wyoming that gets down to -20 in the winter, -40 with wind chill. It snows but not nearly as much as in much of the state. Right now we have 65 chickens, and plan to get enough chicks next spring for a total of about 100. Our property is lined with mature...

    Idaho?

Thank you Chicken Queen! I looked for a local Facebook page but couldn't find one. I'm sure this will help!

    Idaho?

We just moved to Idaho Falls a couple weeks ago. We came from Albuquerque where the backyard chicken limit is 15, including 1 allowed rooster. I am having a hard time with the idea of only 6 hens! We are buying a house in Ammon and then we will build our flock. How strict do city officials and...

Is food poisoning passed on through eggs

Last week our family ate some hamburger that turned out to be bad and we all got food poisoning. Before I knew this I gave my toddler's leftovers to our chickens. They had been laying about 4 eggs a day but now they're only laying 1 or 2. They are also not eating as much as usual. Are their eggs...
