    Aerobics for Cornish X

LOL they do have the agility of an aircraft carrier. We have a mean old hen that used to pick on them when freeranging, but she figured out that in a couple weeks they end up larger than she LOL. I took a video of the chicks playing football with a cricket. I should put it on youtube and link...

    What's wrong with my girls?

I am not sure about the cause of death, but you are right about the grit. It is important to that they have some source of grit, weather it is from the dirt or introduced. Usually stores like Tractor Supply, Orchard Supply, etc have chicken grit. When I first got chickens, I had an old...

    California - Northern

I currently live in Yuba City, just 40 miles North of Sacramento. When I went to the defense language institute in Monterey, the US Army considered it Northern California, so I would have to agree with you, Nifty. Since the US Government calls South of Monterey Southern California, I am...

    Capon adventure

There is a great thread on BYC about capons. Most of the tools purchased are designed to fit birds younger than 6 weeks. When they are younger the testies are both easily accessible from the one side, as they are staggered front to back rather than side to side. It is stressful the first...

    Aerobics for Cornish X

When all of my chickens are free-ranging, I got kind of tired of seeing the CornishX's laying around, so I decided to get them some exercise. Our Australian Shepherd would probably give them a heart attack with the amount he likes to make the chickens move, so we needed an alternative. My...

DIY HUMANE way to Kill Slaughter Chicken (Stun-kill, Gas)

We raise meat and egg chickens, and I don't think anyone normal wants to hurt another living creature. I think that if you look at their cognitive functions and their lack of higher reasoning, it is simply a matter of instinctive fear. I have chickens that have been around for years (nearly...

There is nothing that annoys or ticks me off more!!!

If people really "cared" about the well being of the chickens, they would encourage back yard chicken raisers to kill and eat their own chickens. The more chickens we kill and eat at our house, the less our household supports the large poultry industry that houses their chickens in less than...

    Mealworm farming

Hannakat, when you posted your pictures and your method, you mentioned that you cut out the top drawer so that the freshly hatched worms drop to the second drawer to grow into larger larvae. My first question is what type or size of screen did you use, and have you found that to be better than...

    watering nipples

A neat idea, that has worked well for me (as I am kind of lazy) is to take your five gallon bucket and put a simple float control anchored to the side and attached to a hose. The float keeps the 5 gallon bucket filled, and the five gallon bucket keeps the water pressure at a couple psi for the...

    Meat Bird Producers

I get mine from a local farm supply. They are always straight run and cost about $1.10 each. They always throw in extra chicks making my total less, and since i started using DE i lose very very few birds. Also, I feed them a lot of yard clippings and such, so the overall cost is pretty low.
