    Nearly unresponsive hen

She may have had a stroke... Sometimes they can more or less recover from such an event (my parent's dog had a stroke and recovered very well) . Just keep her warm and feed her water. If you do not see any signs of improvement in the next 48 hours it may be something else. Good luck!!

How long does it take for an ill chick to recover?

Small update again - I took one other chick to the vet today because she didn't look too good and I just don't want another one to die. The vet suspects they have coccidiosis so gave me antibiotics and some extra nutritious food. When my chick got ill I browsed the web for clues but I thought...

How long does it take for an ill chick to recover?

Thanks for your reply, very much appreciated! The other 3 chicks had diarrhea as well but seemed to have recovered from it now... So I hope I don't need to worry anymore about the disease (or whatever it was) spreading. But if anyone knows more about what it could have been and if I should take...

How long does it take for an ill chick to recover?

Quick update... we found her dead in the crate this morning. I think she became too weak to recover.

How long does it take for an ill chick to recover?

Oh, forgot to tell - her poos are quite solid again most of the time, although they are a more light brown colour than usual.

How long does it take for an ill chick to recover?

I have 4 chicks who are almost 9 weeks old (3 x light sussex and 1 x breed unknown) and they are hen raised. Two weeks I moved them to a bigger run, together with their mum. A few days later I noticed the chicks had diarrhea and they were all getting dirty bums (probably some bacteria from my...

Light Sussex 7 weeks old - boy and girl?

Hi, I managed to take better pictures of 2 of my Light Sussex chicks (both 7 weeks old). I think they are a boy and a girl, what do you think? Thanks!

4 chicks - boy or girl? (6 weeks old)

@silverfox you mean roo, or not? @smarsh why do you think chick B is a roo? Its wattle and comb are much smaller and more pale than of chick A, that's why I thought (and hoped) it's a girl it would be a real bummer if all my 3 light sussex are boys... they make good table birds but I'd...

4 chicks - boy or girl? (6 weeks old)

Hi, Below are some pictures of my little 6 week old chooks. 3 of them are light sussex and one was a surprise egg. I had to take several pictures because they didn't sit still when I popped out my camera. To make it less confusing I gave them all a name and this is what I think the genders...

Is my 4 week old chick ill or being pecked at?

One of my hen raised chicks (4 weeks old) is missing quite a few feathers on the neck and wings (see images). First I thought it was because it's getting its adult feather coat or it was because it's being pecked at by the others, but since today he/she is also a bit lethargic.. stays in coop...

    What breed is my chick?

Hi, I have 4 hen raised chicks that are now 4 weeks old. They are doing really well :-) One thing - I bought them as fertile Light Sussex eggs from a local farmer, but one chick definitely doesn't look like a Light Sussex chick!! He/she has a cream coloured head/neck and a brown coat with...

Hen raised chicks - will mother hen keep them warm when it gets colder outside?

Thanks for all your comments, I am now convinced I shouldn't worry at all :-)

Hen raised chicks - will mother hen keep them warm when it gets colder outside?

I've got 4 lovely hen raised chicks, the mother hen is very caring and dedicated (see photo). They are now a little over 2 weeks old and mum has been taking them outside a lot already. The outside temperature has been quite warm so far, but I am a bit worried the temperatures may be a bit lower...

Egg candling - can't tell if eggs are viable?

Good news - yesterday all 4 eggs hatched! Attached is the result :-) The mum is very loving and caring. One of the four is slightly darker in colour as you can see... a surprise egg? The other 3 are Light Sussex.

Egg candling - can't tell if eggs are viable?

Just a quick note - I candled the eggs again today (Day 14) and 4 out of 10 have "something" in it... the other ones are definitely empty so I chucked them. I hope all 4 will hatch... and that they won't be 4 roosters
