    Nesting Box Material

My girls are only about 10 weeks old, but I am trying to plan ahead. What is the best material to use for nesting box material? I did not have any straw, and though I would want a different material than the pine shaving bedding I use on the floor. I put some long dried grass and a few small...

My RIRs did the same thing, until I hung the feeder and waterer. Then they took right to the roosts, and I saved a ton of feed.

Young ones won't leave the coop

We have had our 8 week old RIR in the coop for about a week, but the do not seem to come out of the coop. I have a 14" square cut out of the floor, with a sliding door over it. I open the door every morning, and close the door every night, but have yet to see a chicken out in the run. I tried...

Quote: A lid is next on the list. Tomorrow I am going to my father-in-law's. He used to raise pheasants, and I think he still has some wire I can "borrow". I plan to use some for a lid, and some to build a little platform to try and keep the feed and water cleaner.

Quote: I used a box from work that we package customer parts in. It is 48" x 40" and 24" tall. I cut some pieces to put in the corners to keep the little ones from getting squashed.

    Coop size ?

I will be getting 10 chicks in 10 days and am planning on building a 4 ft x 8 ft x 4 ft tall coop. Will this be large enough? I do not know the breed, they are from a local hatchery and sold as "browns" and are a dual purpose bird. Also, what would be a good size run for this number of birds...

    Finished our brooder with pic

Started and finished my brooder today. Took me and the kids about an hour, and they had a blast. It took a while to get the light adjusted to the right height, but it has been holding a steady 97 degrees for the last 6 hours. I still need to work on a feeding and watering systems; but the...

    Brooder heat/light question.

Quote: The garage is insulated, but not heated. I live in central WI, and the night temps are around the mid 30's right now. Chicks will be here in about a week and a half, so it should be a little warmer by then, bit it is only April, so maybe not.

    Brooder heat/light question.

Going to put together my brooder this weekend and was wondering what to use for heat. I am a little concerned about using a heat lamp because of the risk of fire in my garage, but was wondering if a 100 Watt bulb would keep the chicks up and noisy at night. Is there something that will keep the...

    When to get rooster?

I am ordering pullets and planning just eggs for now, but if everything goes well, I hope to hatch some eggs for more chicks. Just wondering if it is difficult to introduce a rooster later or just get one with the pullets?

    When to get rooster?

I am going to give this chicken thing a try. I am getting ready to order from a local hatchery and do not want to worry about more chicks for a while. Would it be easier to get a rooster now, or introduce one later?
