Thanks for the responses. I'm keeping an eye on it as I'm starting to feel quite bad for the drake being chased. The poor guy is just minding his own business when the aggressor comes and starts chasing him. I've even seen him trying to hide from him when they are in their coop.
I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this before and if so, what are your thoughts.
Our older flock (about 13 months old) has 3 males and 10 females. They've lived in perfect harmony for the past year but in the last two days, one of the males has been chasing around another male and...
The Alpha or the two other male 300's aren't super aggressive per se. They just just like getting busy with the females.. alot. The alpha keeps an eye on the group and makes sure nobody is left behind, or steps in if someone is acting up but that's about it. No injuries to another duck, just...
I'm looking for advice from those experienced with joining two groups of ducks together. I've got a group of 13 golden 300's (10 female, 3 male) that are a tad over 1 year old, who live in a separate coop and stay outside in a separate pen as well. My other group are 15 Welsh Harlequins (13...
I do the same thing. I use about a 2x4 bale every week and keep layering it. I change out about once every 6 months and compost as well. Luckily, I use converted horse stalls in my barn for my ducks, so I can afford the space to build up a 6-8" based over the course of 6 months.
No worries about...
This is a good point. I might consider doing this if it gets to the point of where the backs of their necks are a little bloody.
Thanks for the insight everyone!
We have 13 Golden 300's, 10 females and 3 males that are nearly a year old. I've noticed this past week the females have some thin spots on the back of their necks, which can only be from when the males, uh, "do their thing" to the female.
Interestingly enough, one of the males has a tendency to...
We're on our second order with Metzer. Their ducklings have arrived tired but in good health both times. We haven't lost any from our first batch and one died the first day for our second batch but that's it (I suspect that it choked on something). Metzer posts a great "how to" for raising...
It took a little practice but our ducks learned how to be herded. We'd just walk near them and put our arms out ala motioning a taxing aircraft. They would get the idea and generally move where we wanted them to go.
Now, they get a little loud and congregate near the gate when they sense it's...
We have 13 Golden 300's that lay an egg/day per female and we go through a 40ilb bag of feed probably every 1.5 - 2 weeks. They free range outside and we give them vegetable scraps as well during the day time. At night they get the feed when they are inside their pen. So I guess that would be...
