I know this post is really old but we are considering doing the same thing and using a portable garage frame for our next run. Did this wind up working well for you? Anything you noticed that was an inconvenience or annoyance that you disliked about it that we would want to be aware of...

Symptoms in quarantine birds, is vet trip needed?

Good suggestion, I caved and gave them the treats since the rice was supposed to help settle stomachs after worming and I am eager to start getting a healthier diet into them, but it makes sense that would complicate things. Any guess as to how long it would take to "stabilize" droppings once...

Symptoms in quarantine birds, is vet trip needed?

Thank you. :) That is the plan, and it sounds like it will be a slightly longer than 30 day quarantine since the vet can't get them in until the 20th. We are lucky to have one in the area, so it sounds like the best bet is to take advantage of that and get a professional's assessment.

Symptoms in quarantine birds, is vet trip needed?

Thanks Wyorp, I know there is never a guarantee of safety (asymptomatic carriers and all) but since I am so new to this I was hoping to get a read out on whether most people would wait and watch with the symptoms we are seeing, or if any are alarming enough to definitely warrant a trip to the...

Symptoms in quarantine birds, is vet trip needed?

Thanks Tony, I have done a thorough check of all superficial areas. Mouths look good, vents are clear with no sign of parasites (as are the areas under their wings), leg scales are smooth and foot pads look healthy. Posture, balance, alertness all seem good too. It is really just the strange...

Symptoms in quarantine birds, is vet trip needed?

Hi everyone, I am hoping to get some opinions from those with more experience. I have 3 new hens that are finishing up quarantine in about a week and a half. I am considering taking them to a vet for a well check before integrating as a couple have symptoms I am a little nervous about, but I am...

New hen quit laying halfway through. Reason to worry?

Last week we brought home 3 new girls to add to our flock of only 2. One was already squatting and has a very red comb and wattles. We figured she would likely lay soon but were not aware whether she already was or not. Well, we found our first egg from them last night. We assumed it was her...

New hens in quarantine but displaying symptoms, not sure how to proceed

Just an update and a couple more questions. The girls got a foot bath and got placed in their more adequate quarantine coop with sand bedding last night. Trying to minimize stress, so we didn't do a whole inspection for the less worrisome things last night, but will this evening. We did check...

New hens in quarantine but displaying symptoms, not sure how to proceed

The version of medical paste we got does also have Ivermectin. The chart I pulled up shows that medication (the Ivermectin) is effective for gape worm. Let me know though if that is incorrect, I am new to all this and want to plan ahead if we might want something different on hand in case of...

New hens in quarantine but displaying symptoms, not sure how to proceed

Thank you, great to know the Praziquantel is the right method. I figure the one I am getting would address other worms like gapeworm if present, so might as well hit that too. No missing leg scales or feather damage, but I do think I want to dust them in case something was just getting going...

New hens in quarantine but displaying symptoms, not sure how to proceed

    1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Red Star hen, approx 5 months old, have not gotten weight yet but she does not feel thin or excessively light. 2) What is the behavior, exactly. Some sneezing and what sounds like coughing...

Bumping too, as I am curious what the answer is.

Wattle contest! - ends July 31

Honestly, waffles is a darn cute nickname for wattles. 😂 Just might go out in a bit and give my boys some waffle scritches.

    New member from AZ

Thank you all so much for the warm welcome! 😊 I am thrilled to be here. We just moved from Glendale to the area around Show Low. How did your flock handle the recent heat wave? It was up to 104 even here in the White Mountains, I can only imagine what the city was dealing with. Can't tell you...
