How about a wild pig - we are plagued with the things here, usually in the late winter / early spring, when they roto-tiller our lawns like you wouldn't believe. Just 2 days ago my son came to feed animals for me, and found a pig rooting around my chicken run . Fortunately we put an electric...
I have 20 - all named - my son thinks I'm nuts - but I think chickens are very entertaining, so they deserve "special" names - Blanca, Juanita, Margarita, Patsy, Stella, Dolly, Victoria, Angelina, Olivia, Georgina, Beatrice, Camilla, Charlotte, Caroline, Francine, Dorothy, Betsy, Sassy, Scarlet...
Thanks for all the kind words - somehow the mexican theme came to me - I looked up the colorful Talavera pottery and based the colors and the sign on that. LOVE the idea of yellow with lavender - I was pushing it a bit with my colors - grandson says I ruined it by toning down the yellow! It...
My girls are 8 wks old now, and are such a hoot! I have a rule here - Nothing lives at my house unless it's a pet! Well, they seem to have gotten the word. I spent lots of time sitting with them when they were little, then started feeding them treats - now, out of 20, I have about 15 that are...
Thanks - the colors were my bit of silliness in my back yard, as was the name - some of my chickens have hispanic names as well - Juanita, Margarita, and Blanca - I'm pretty sure 'galinas' is spelled with one L - 'gallo' is a rooster (5 years of Spanish in middle and high school)
I did - hubby refused to have them in the house - so I built a brooder out of the rigid foam insulation panels - started with a 2 x 4 area, gradually increased the size as they got bigger, until I just took it apart and let them have the whole coop. I WOULD NOT use the foam panels again because...
Just had to share pics of my new coop and run - I based the design pretty directly from one in the coop design section - it is 8 x 12 ft, with windows on all sides to allow for good ventilation - we're in upstate SC - we built the coop under a big oak tree for lots of shade in the summer, but...

I ordered my nipples from QC supply - I think they were about 1.89 each with a rubber grommet for each one - the biggest problem I had was finding an 11/32 drill bit for the holes - they do allow you a little leeway in the size for the holes, if you can't find that size. They were hard to push...
Thanks, all - as usual very helpful info - the pictures were great - of course, makes you wonder -just a little - about someone who goes around photographing chicken poops!
Newbie here - with 6 wk old chicks in their new coop - One thing I've found that I would have done differently is I would have painted the roosts and all other bare wood in the coop - once they go outside - any time now, as soon as we finish fencing their run - I'm going to lock them out for a...
Poop question from newbie - what is the dark brown slimy stuff that really stinks? the regular poop doesn't seem to smell much, but I can sure tell when someone's done one of the other kind - it also coats the roosts and seems to soak in, so I can't scrape it off.
I have 6 week old chicks - a nice big coop with 2 nice roosts - what do they do - roost every where else - in the windows, shelves - also on the roosts - I think they like to look out the windows! Will this continue to be the case, or do you think they'll settle on the roosts - I had no idea...
