    Five hens and lot of noise - will more nest boxes help?

    We have 10 hens and three nest boxes. There is ALWAYS one box with no eggs in it and our girls loudly tell the whole neighbourhood they laid an egg. I don't think more boxes will help at all.

    Our babies started using a dowel rod at around 1.5 weeks. By 4 weeks they had graduated up to a 1x2 and by 6 weeks they were outside in their coop with 2x3 roosts.

    warning of sorts

    Take a tea bag and wet it in boiling water and apply it to the stings. Should take the sting out and help with the swelling. Something about tannic acids in the tea. We used to live in Florida and this was what my grandmother did when we got stung.

    Queenie has a natural stinkeye, but it gets worse when she has decided to be broody and I keep taking her eggs. She growls too!

    selling price for eggs?

    We have 10 hens and are getting 8-10 eggs a day. Hubby takes the eggs to work and sells them $2.00 a doz, and the buyer returns the cartons. We give a doz to each of the neighbours who have asked for them.

    What made you interested to have chickens?

    I got tired of paying $5 for a doz eggs claiming to be free range and not really knowing if they were or not. That and I wanted something to help me control bugs and I thought chickens would be great at it.

    I think I'll try rye seed next fall. I know the snow will still cover it but maybe it will be green sooner than the regular grass in May.
