The Grand Sparrow Haven Lodge
We have added chickens to the menagerie that is Sparrow Haven. If you are simply interested in reading about the coop, I plan on adding pictures with summary text as I go. I hope this can be helpful to someone out there.
This is the first time we have ever had...
We have 10 hens and three nest boxes. There is ALWAYS one box with no eggs in it and our girls loudly tell the whole neighbourhood they laid an egg. I don't think more boxes will help at all.
Our babies started using a dowel rod at around 1.5 weeks. By 4 weeks they had graduated up to a 1x2 and by 6 weeks they were outside in their coop with 2x3 roosts.
Take a tea bag and wet it in boiling water and apply it to the stings. Should take the sting out and help with the swelling. Something about tannic acids in the tea. We used to live in Florida and this was what my grandmother did when we got stung.
Sorry to say mine ate everything in the garden, including the leaves of the squash and beans. Luckily I only have 10 so I was able to mitigate the damage.
Not just you.
I usually dream that they have all wondered out of the yard, or died, or were eaten by shadow shapes....classic worry dreams.
Last night I dreamt that I found a miniature chicken, full grown bot much bigger than a pet rat. I kept running from yard sale to junk shop looking for a...
I don't know this person but I remember someone was looking for Milfluers in the Ontario/ Quebec area a few months ago.

We have 10 hens and are getting 8-10 eggs a day. Hubby takes the eggs to work and sells them $2.00 a doz, and the buyer returns the cartons. We give a doz to each of the neighbours who have asked for them.
We have a very similar dream, you and I.
Your are in a good position to make that dream a reality especially as your spouse has a skill that can be transferred. Not sure about your area but around here craftsmen of is skill are in high demand. I suspect they are in any area, though it may...
I got tired of paying $5 for a doz eggs claiming to be free range and not really knowing if they were or not. That and I wanted something to help me control bugs and I thought chickens would be great at it.
Since winter has kicked in and we have snow covering the grass, I've been trying different treats for the girls. They turned their beaks up at cooked pumpkin and squash. They love cooked cabbage and tolerate cooked carrot. No raw foods though.
Their all time favorite is cooked pearl barley. I...
We have two dogs. One Shepard cross follows the chickens around looking for poopy treat (eww!), or get into their food. The small dog only stood toe to toe once. Our dominate hen pecked her on the nose. Now they follow her around the yard, just to bug her.
Squirrels are omnivores and will eat eggs if they can get to them.
That being said, I have a ton of squirrels in my yard and they have never tried to get into the chicken coop. Of course that may be because my chickens are velociraptors and I have seen them stalking squirrels, chipmunks...
We've been below zero for a week here and the girls don't have any problems with that at all. They don't like the deep snow but really enjoy grazing in the paths I made around the backyard for them, and me. If they get cold they huddle in the dry straw under their coop or go inside for a breather.
