Hello all.
I am currently in MA, but planning to move to Coventry RI.
I have had chickens for 6 years now.
Are there any places locally to buy chicks? I have purchased through the mail before, but I prefer a small flock- and mail order minimums are too high!
I have ordered from Meyer 3X. Two times the shipping came right to my home, and once they called me to the PO. The shipping has been overnight twice, and once there was mix up and it took 3 days...
This year I drove up to Dodge Grain in Salem NH to get chicks so I didn't have to sit at home...
Only one egg today. Don't know who laid it, but I suspect our brahma- light brown egg.
Our hens include- One six yr old EE. She rarely lays anymore, but she is our oldest hen, and a sweetheart.
4 yr old EE and White rock
2 year old Campine, 2 wyandottes
1 yr old -4 ee, 2 marans...
I have 17 hens. I'm getting 1-2 eggs/day. The rest still aren't laying. I know it's been a rough winter, but this is ridiculous! Those are some expensive eggs!
Thanks for posting about Dodge Grain. They are about an hour away, but it seems they have a good selection, and they actually know what birds they will be getting. I live outside of Worcester. I have called a couple farm stores, and most don't know what they will get.. they say they get...
The other birds are 5 easter egger, 3 wyandottes, a couple marans, brahma, cochin. All heavy breeds.I didn't lose any other birds.
The coop is not insulated/heated, and it's been a bad winter here.
I have a mixed flock. I had 4 polish that I got in a batch of assorted rare pullets from Meyers last spring, but they all passed this winter. It has been brutally cold and snowy. All the other birds seem fine, Could it be just too cold for Polish?
I ordered 6 April 7th.
3 EE's
2 BLRW
1 Welsummer
They all looked awful when they arrived... Thursday afternoon.
wobbley and weak.
The welsummer looked the worse off when they arrived, but she put up a good fight.
We lost 2 of the 6- a splash BLRW the prettiest chick, and the fluffiest EE...
11... nothing.
My daughter woke up at 5am with her ear blocked and hurting.
Pretty sure she has an ear infection..
I was hoping to get the chicks settled in and take her to the Drs..
Still waiting for the chicks! Gah!
