Hubs and I were talking about getting an incubator at the first of the year and then well...things just got away from us. it wasn't really a "we MUST do this" sort of thing just a "maybe we will do this" sort of deal. LOL And then.........
We had a hen go broody.
We gave her 8 eggs...
Today I found a heavily speckled two toned egg. it's dark at the top and lighter on the bottom. I was trying to get a good photo but the lighting in here was not good. It's very thin shelled and was "dented" at the top. Anyway, has anyone else ever had this issue? And what causes that? I'm not...
We got our first two eggs today!!
Unfortunately, they were laid on the floor of the coop and NOT in the boxes and both got smashed
We cleaned out the old bedding to make sure there weren't any more and put new bedding down. They go in and out of the boxes so they know they are there...
it REALLY is! We check every day. And when we lift the door on the nesting boxes, one of the girls usually comes to see what we are doing. So it's explained that it's the place they go to leave eggs! LOL (yes, I talk to my chickens like can understand EVERYTHING I am saying..lol)
ME!!!!!!
Our reds are getting close..the barred rocks are a bit younger so it's not so anxious with them. My girls go in and out of the boxes. Mess around a little bit with the golf balls, stay for a minute or two and then hop out.
Waiting is not much fun....worth it...but not fun..LOL
The waiting IS the hardest part. We have a group of RIRs that are 21 weeks today, and we are still waiting for eggs.
We have one with a BRIGHT red comb the others are red-ish. They are all making this sort of "screaming" noise at me when I go see them with treats. And they are all eating...
So, Leroy, my Jersey Giant Roo is now about 16 weeks old. He decided that it was a good idea to puff up and stomp at me when I was petting one of the hens. So when he came at me sideways, he got himself a swat on the back. (He took off running at that point) and then he was picked up and...
Yeah, I really didn't think I could miss Jeoffrey Barathon...but I do now...goodness.
As for smoking birds, we always brine ours for a day before we smoke them. It really tenderizes them for cooking! LOL
We're actually going through this right now as our favorite hen is actually a rooster. I have a super cool roo already, so that left us with the dilemma of what to do. We are leaning more toward clearing space and building another enclosure to add more birds. I'm good with it. Any future...
I'm no expert, but I would say............get ready to rehome or get them ready for "freezer camp". Me personally, I would move her out of there with the Roo she's been with the longest. (I say that only because that's me putting human emotions on a chicken at the moment they are familiar with...
I was raised a "city girl" so I don't have a bunch of experience with animals other than dogs/cats. I am really enjoying the chickens! LOL it surprises me. And yes, he'll have a good home. Hubby and I have already talked about another enclosure and coop set up. I currently have a Jersey...
Bummer...well I guess we'll move the pink band over to the little girl who doesn't have one. I'm sure she'll feel better about not being "naked". LOL I do appreciate the input, not really what we wanted but the world won't come to an end. I guess it just means we'll get some more chickens...
