    New chick sitting on elbows

We just had her out on the computer desk on paper towels and I was doing the same thing! She actually seemed to walk more on her own - I was holding her behind and let go when she started to walk. She went farther than I've seen her do in the nest box. She kept hopping up on the computer...

    New chick sitting on elbows

Sorry - can't do pics. Hubby is out of town with the camera! She is only a few days old. The feed store got them in Thursday and I got them that same day, so she's probably 4 or 5 days old. The other three I got at the same time are all running around and look perfectly fine. This one lays...

    New chick sitting on elbows

More information - I just did a comparison with one of the other barred rocks, and it really looks like her left leg points in toward the middle like she is "pigeon-toed." I put some paper towels in the box to give her more traction - anything else I should do about her leg?

    New chick sitting on elbows

Hi - I just got 4 barred rock chicks two days ago. Three are fine, one is having trouble. She can stand and walk, but only walks a few steps before she sinks down again. Today I noticed that one of her wings seemed like it was glued to her side, so I cleaned it gently with warm water and a...

Can mites or lice cause chicken to walk like a drunk?

Thanks Miss Lydia! That site was very informative. I know now what to look for when I check the birds again, which I will do first thing. This is the first time I've had any problems with my girls and I've had most of them for 3 years.

Can mites or lice cause chicken to walk like a drunk?

Hi - I have a RIR who used to be a beautiful bird. Now she looks terrible - losing feathers, especially around the neck and rear end. Her eyes, nose and breathing are all normal, and she is eating and drinking normally. The only strange thing is that now and then she looks like she can't walk...

RIR off balance, losing feathers - what is it?

I have a RIR who, a few days ago, was a beautiful bird - just over a year old. Now, her feathers are coming out, especially down the neck and around the sides in the back and around her rear. She also is walking funny - sideways and looks like she can't keep her balance. Eyes and nose are...

Something entered my coop last night!!!

Sorry to hear about your lost birds. You might check into the laws in your state - where I live (Florida), it is illegal to trap a wild animal and release it elsewhere, due to the fact that raccoons and such tend to have rabies and they don't want rabies spreading to an area that might not be...

    Hen acting lethargic

Thanks Lesa. After observing her today and doing some more research, I think she may well be eggbound. She has been a good layer for the last two years. I gave her the warm bath and used Vaseline on her vent, but nothing so far. Her stomach feels really full, and her poo is pretty watery at...

    Hen acting lethargic

Hmmm, didn't really notice if it was foamy. I'll try to catch her in the act later. By internal layer, do you mean eggbound? Forgot to mention in my OP that there is no discharge, no respiratory issues - her comb seems a little droopy, though.

    Hen acting lethargic

I'd appreciate any help - I have a 2-1/2 year old RIR who is acting strangely. When I opened the coop this morning to let the girls out to range, this one just stayed in the coop, laying down. She eventually did go out, but has stayed near the coop, either laying down or just standing in one...

    Help solving a predator mystery...

Sounds like a raccoon to me. We had one get into our coop about 3 weeks ago and kill one bird and injure another so severely that she died soon after. The dead one sounds like your turkey - the whole head was torn almost off and the neck ripped out. Not fun. We had the same thing happen a...

    chickens and rain

Not only do mine stand out in the rain, the last time we had a hailstorm, all 12 stood out in their run getting bonked on the heads! I considered going out with an umbrella to protect them, but then thought, hey, they don't seem to mind it, and maybe it will knock some sense into their little...

Molt - How long is long enough and will they ever lay again?

CityChook, I'm having the exact same experience you are. I have 12 hens - 4 are too young to molt but my other ones have been molting FOREVER! I'm thinking they started late summer as well. I have one RIR that looks like she got into a fight with something, she looks so pathetically naked. I...
