Thanks for all the advice! The coop has enough room in it for another roosting bar, so Ill add another one with a different height and see if they go for it on their own then. I guess I'm gonna have to start being so impatient and wait them out! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing...
So my chickens moved out to the coop about 2 weeks ago and they're still not sleeping on their roosting poles. The first few nights they slept all huddled together in one of the nesting boxes, and I let them, thinking it was okay since they were scared. But now, it has gone on for too long! The...
Thanks delvochix, yes I used 1/4" hardware cloth. Only think getting through that are bugs, and somehow I don't think they'll last to long! :) gino100, I really like the idea of having a window in the front. What kind of window are you doing? Will it be able to open for extra ventilation in the...
As of now, we kept the plans exact. I do love those external nesting boxes though! It's seems pretty split up as to where to keep the feed. However, the negatives that have been brought up for keeping the food outside don't really apply for the 'garden coop'. The entire area is predator proof...
Thanks! Food and water would always be available because the door is always open between the coop and run. The coop itself isn't super large so I'm afraid of taking up room with the feeder and waterer.
We just finished building our chicken coop called 'the garden coop' (we bought the plans online). We were going to be hanging the food and water from under neath the hen house (it's raised up substantially from the ground with lots of room underneath), but should we also be putting food and...
Success!.... Well maybe... Wisteria! The only part that is poisonous are the seed pods. They're huge so very easy to pick off, but it would be a fair amount of work. Plus, very invasive so I'd be constantly having to keep it under control. I guess if all else fails you could do some cucumber...
Jasmine is beautiful and nontoxic, but the jasmine VINE is highly poisonous to dogs and cats so I'm assuming chickens as well :( passion vines out, honeysuckles out, hyacinth vines out.... Maybe trumpet vine? I dunno I have to look into it
I was thinking the same thing. I'm unaware of any toxic parts on a rose, so maybe a climbing rose? I can't imagine the chickens would run into issues with the thorns.
One of my chicks has a funny foot. One toe is curving outward the wrong way. She's now 7 weeks old and the problem hasn't gotten any better, but she walks and jumps fine. Since she's acting perfectly normal, is it anything I should be worried about getting problematic?
Mine are 7 weeks now and I'm only just moving them out, but for the day only and inside at night. It's too cold for the poor little things! Make sure they're fully feathered before bringing them out into the cold unless they're being protected from a mother hen.
