Day 23. I had 26 successfully hatched-all pipped on the 21st or early on the 22nd day. One pipped and didn't make it, and there are about 6 eggs that didn't hatch. one has faint peeping, we are at the end of day 23.. Other than watch it, is there anything that should be done? The incubator...

    Help please!!!!!

Maybe check out the "hands on hatchign" post? I would think you needed to keep it very warm like an incubator, and very damp, so that he could possibly finish absorbing on his own, if that is even possible? Do you have access to an incubator? Otherwise maybe with damp paper towels and a...

"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

I've got 45 (give or take one) eggs in a LG. It's all colorful eggs-either Marans eggs (pure, because our rooster is marans) or Easter egger barnyard mix, so it is all blues and chocolate browns. Set yesterday but my temperatures are giving me trouble-any suggestions appreciated!

Help! LG held a steady temp for a solid week-added eggs, 15 & 20 hrs later it is steady at 94 degre

The subject line says it all, but I'm really concerned! I know instructions say not to adjust anything for 24 hours, but we are at the 22 hour mark and my very sensitive thermometer (which held steady temps at 99.9-100.7 for a week prior to adding eggs) is reading 94 at the level of the eggs...

    La Poulets Page

Hi! Welcome to my page. We live in Southwest Louisiana and are enjoying our first forays into keeping chickens for egg production. In the past we've only raised a few as pets. We have three young boys and a growing menagerie! Spot & Lucy, our two rescue dogs and yard guardians (shhhh-don't...

One of our favorite Roos dead this afternoon - heatstroke?

I guess I should add that we have had no illness in our flock, I use DE regularly and have seen no sign of lice or mites (and we inspect them regularly) and we haven't added any new birds... basically nothing has changed except for the weather.

Wanting Black Jersey Giants in Louisiana

We hatched out nine last year and ended up with only one roo, which my kids loved, and we recently lost him. I would like at the very least a big roo, or an assortment of young BJGs to raise.

One of our favorite Roos dead this afternoon - heatstroke?

He was about 2 years old, and I found him laying in the back of the chicken tractor, with his favorite hen standing guard next to his body My kids are so sad. Normally we try to have the tractors in the shade on hot days, but today it was in the sun (although covered & completely...

Some of my hens are very muddy, should I bathe them before a freeze?

Please pardon my ignorance... our temperature normally only dips below freezing once or twice a year, and oddly enough, it will be freezing for 4-5 nights in a row this week. We have had awfully wet weather for a couple weeks; the entire yard is like a big muddy sponge, and several of my hens...

Help integrating separate flocks-Guineas on the attack

I have two issues open for suggestions! I have two small flocks in separate tractors I would like to combine, basically adding new hens to a pen with a roo & a few hens. The roo and the hens are very mild mannered, and have accepted a hen before, however that pen is also home to two guineas...

5 month old Faverolles are laying, how long will the eggs be tiny?

Oh my! I guess I should have just waited before posting. Today I went out to check eggs and there were our regular 2 BR eggs and one gigantic, size of a double-yolker (doesn't fit in the regular carton) that I think came from my faverolle who has been laying tiny eggs. Poor thing.

5 month old Faverolles are laying, how long will the eggs be tiny?

Thanks! Mine are darker, not an off-white or tint but a very pale brown... like the lightest I've ever gotten from my BR. They are perfectly uniform in size (I have over a dozen) just really, really tiny. Fart egg size.

5 month old Faverolles are laying, how long will the eggs be tiny?

Oh wow, I hope they don't stay this tiny! They are about the size of a thumprint, or a mini-cadbury chocolate egg.
