Hey. Been an emotional 24 hours. Started with my husband calling to tell me 7 of my hens had been killed by what we thought was as the time a weasel. 4 buffs, brahma, chanteclar and white jersey. Very upset. Also one of my Muscovy hens was injured but not killed. The 7 killed were on the coop...
I do have a drake but he has not shown any interest in the hens. He will chase a hen if she happened to pick on one of the duck hens. I see this as more protective behaviour though.
I actually observed this tonight when out in the barn but it was a hen (duck) grooming a hen (chicken). The chicken was feeding around the ducks and the duck was mouthing around the chickens neck and such. The chicken did not seem to be paying much attention to the duck. Thoughts.....
Thanks for the encouragement. We are going to try and see if we can help. I have some splinting material to work with. I will also add some asprin to his water for pain and maybe some calcium for bone development. I will keep posted. Thanks.
HI, I got ducks today to add to my chickens and when the owner picked up one of the drakes it struggled so much the owner accidentally broke the drakes leg. I felt so bad as he was going to kill the drake otherwise, that I brought the drake home. there is an obvious break at the knee joint. I...
My hens will likely take care of them for about 6-8 weeks (not 100% sure... never really noted it before). Once the chicks/pullets seem to be more independant my one hen, the Frizzle, beans them on the head and then she is done! She heads off to perch on her own and starts laying another...
Thanks so much. I have been doing the range of motion exercises and sometimes she seems to get up better then others. I will try to get some pics of her tomorrow and post them. I will read the link to see ideas on how to bind and such. Thanks :)
HI, I have a buckeye whom I have had in isolation for a few weeks now. I found her one day limping and it got progressively worse. The foot would push out to the side when she laid down. I thought maybe something nerological but the last week or so she seems to be getting up on the leg a bit...
another question.... how does a roade island and an americauna end up with a pure white offspring????? if this is what you call an EE.... neither her or her sister are laying yet...... I only got them around the same time the roo was hatched.
THanks for the responses. I konw the mom was not an EE (don't have any) or my Americauna (only one egg was green*( that produced the bo/americauna girl in the pic) and only had one americauna laying) Never thought of the chanteclers.... I am not sure what the eggs was for sure...beige in color I...
