    Best Rooster for My Flock?

Hello! I’m going to add my 2 cents worth: If raising from chicks, I suggest waiting until they are something like 7 plus months old. I have read many times here and somewhat experienced that many adult behaviors in roosters - including people aggression - start showing up roughly 7-12 months. A...

Chicken Coloration in Settings Where It Is Actually Cryptic

Not quite the same, but I had figured the black/white barred pattern would be similar to a zebra’s stripes and difficult for predators to focus on …?

Possible idea to manage coop waste/cleaning

Hi, sorry for the delay in response! I haven’t popped on in a bit. I never remember the exact dimensions, but the run is huge and exceeds the 360 square feet. I think it’s at least 700?? And we are going to add a daytime un covered pen off the run as well. The coop I think is probably around the...

    Crossing Cornish X with RIR?

SO SORRY - I seemed to have somehow gotten on the wrong thread. PLEASE DISREGARD

    Crossing Cornish X with RIR?

There is a good thread on here about someone who “experimentally” raised Cornish X to keep them alive. It’s do-able but takes work. Even so, I have not encountered CX stories living more than a few years.

Any advice for buying hatching eggs?

This is definitely true. However, I assume that properly labeled boxes of hatching eggs are handled differently, perhaps similar to live chicks? And you should always pick up at your local PO rather than getting it delivered to your mailbox, if you are able. Even so, I’m sure there is an...

Any advice for buying hatching eggs?

Maybe try a batch of shipped eggs from a “cheap” breed first? Then you can see how the experience goes for you. If you have a bad experience and nothing hatches, while unfortunate, you won’t be out to much $$.

Any advice for buying hatching eggs?

Looks like you are all set then! Though I will comment that most of the time there aren’t problems with shipping chicks, depending on your location. Of course there are horror stories, but the majority are fine. I’m still a little skeptical of $200 though … Ayam Cemanis were very pricey, and...

I've tried searching this and can't seem to find it, but does anyone have a simple list of typical kitchen scraps that are safe for your hens?

So … you will get a wide answer on this. And all of it will be antidotal/based on each person’s experience. To my knowledge there is no actual toxicity studies with backyard chickens on much of anything(exception being moldy chicken feed). There are a lot of extrapolation from other species like...

    Meyers vs. My pet chicken

As mentioned, many of the breeds on My Pet Chicken are sourced from Meyer stock. I have ordered from both and was overall pleased. For some reason, this year, the same breed on My Pet Chicken as on Meyer might be a dollar or two less (I’m looking at you white sport Legbar). Two years ago I got a...

Any advice for buying hatching eggs?

Most of what I have been hatching is shipped eggs. There’s been various problems from various different aspects, from the seller’s end all the way through my end through hatching. Overall, though, I will continue to hatch shipped eggs to get the breeds I want (space pending!) and overall have...

Chicken feet - can I “salvage” them?

*bookmarks link* Well, they were butchered in the fall so not quite a year yet … If it matters, I’ve kept carcasses in the freezer maybe up to nine-ish months before cooking and the broth tasted fine? Well, not freezer-y anyway to my palate. So far the biggest thing (and probably most duh)...

Chicken feet - can I “salvage” them?

So, I saved my chicken feet in the freezer from last year. I haven’t mentally gotten to the point of using them as people food yet, but it seems such a waste to chuck them in the woods. My idea was to dehydrate and give out as fancy dog treats, as I had seen this online. I had clipped the nails...

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

Thanks for the replies! I currently have 19 cooking in there. There is an order of at least 8 coming, though at this point I don’t know when or how viable they will be, thanks to the post office. The wayward batch is literally coming from KY, a state touching my own, VATracking number says...

Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 Incubator is AMAZING!

So far I have been pleased with my NR 360. It’s temp is about a degree off, but this is totally manageable. Anyway, I’ve ordered some hatching eggs in hopes they will hatch during a visit from my sis and niece. But my eyes are bigger than my sto- … incubator it seems. The three sellers have...
