Earlier this winter, even late fall, our young hens almost stopped laying altogether. Then even as the days were getting shorter, their egg production started to come back up again.
Is their loss in production from moulting or from the change in daylight hours? We do not have a light for them...
I know I saw this topic a while ago before I was getting eggs, but now I can't find it!
My hens aren 't going to the boxes yet-well starting now, and are laying them in the corners of the coop. Am I correct, do not wash the eggs until you use them?
Thanks!
Well, I mean not fertile vrs. non fertile, but chasing them around? We have 2 roosters and 19 hens, actually got 8 eggs today, but wondered if the roos behavoir negated egg production.
THANKS!
Well, we bought our chicks and there were 2 rooster chicks among them. Now we are finally getting eggs. If we are getting them daily and refrigerating them, will we see any signs of them being fertilized-like blood spots-etc.
I had a nightmare about fertilized eggs last night!
Well, we have light and dark brahamas, jersy giants, australorps, buff orpingtons, silver wyandotts and one barred rock-which I know is a pullet.
Did a little investigating and think I have not 1 but 2 roosters! I may be back with photos!
Well that's the problem-I have 7 breeds and no one is quite standing out yet.I am suspicious of a light brahama, as it has more of a comb coming in. I'll do some evaluations and get some pics and post up.
THANKS!
Hey everyone-Chicks are now over 2 months old and doing great. I am going to try to help my 8 year old pick out his chickens for the fair from our group.
Can anyone direct me to a breed standard website-beyond what is listed here? I'm looking at sending him with the Light or Dark...
Update****
Well, we still have no idea what happened to her, but she is slowly coming out of it. 2 days ago, she appeared fine at the feeder, then out of the blue, tucked her head to her breast and started literally running backward. Then was fine again.
But, normally, she isn't showing any...
We have a jersey giant pullet that is 5-6 weeks old and recently moved from the brooder in the basement to the coop with heat lamps. Everyone was doing very well, until now.
One Jersey Giant is tucking her head to her breast and now is walking backwards. Everyone else is fine.
Could it be an...
That's where our chicks came from about 1 1/2 weeks ago. They were shipped to our Bomgaars store. I was supposed to get 8, they ordered plenty more from the store. I came home with 22! We only lost one, and I think it was our fault. We didn't get a backside clean-note to newbies-read the post...
Years ago, I took a photo of a Canadian Goose sitting on her babies almost just like that. One gosling poked her head out of the wing. It was perfect and won a few photography contests.
VERY ADORABLE!
