I know it's hard to get a good rooster. He's our 3rd one and he's definitely our nicest one. I'm not sure why he's attacking Cocoa, he was raised with her, she's a year older than him. I think we'll give her away and hope this was an isolated event! If not, I'll have to relook at this situation.
uggh, it just takes so long to get a good rooster!!! I think I may just find a home for Cocoa, my SIL has some chickens, and she may just need another!!!
yep, get your hens inside then grab your trusty shot gun! I thought it sounded like some coward dumping off an unwanted rooster! You never know where he comes from and what disease or pests he may be bringing along. Get rid of him!
Our rooster is seeking out and brutally attacking one of our hens. We have 13 hens and finally raised a rooster who is gentle yet protective. We also have 25 chicks that are 7 weeks old (and living in the same coop) and he is gentle with them! Whenever he sees Cocoa, he runs accross the yard...
He definitely stands out of the group for his volume and constant peeps! I was more wondering if this was a breed thing? I have leghorns, marans, sussex, brahmas, and cochins in the group and the have quiet happy cheeps. Not like this little guy, he's so loud!
Ordered a batch of chicks and out of the 36, my mystery chick (salmon faverolle) cheeps constantly. Kinda like he is cold, hungry, or thirsty. He is eating and drinking and he can find the heat lamp too. I don't get it, why is he alway cheepin? He never shuts up, even when he's dozing off...
Speaking of mother hens, my mama hen would turn her nose up at feeding her babies chick starter. I always put food in for her and starter for the chicks. Once they hatched, she'd seek out pieces of corn or grain for her babies and cluck for them to eat it. The chicks never once touched their...
thanks, I will definitely check it out. My dear mother may make them for me if I figure out a pattern for her! BTW, what sort of rooster is it in your profile/avatar picture? My rooster is a EE mixture (mom=EE, dad was barred rock/buff orpington mix) Yours is so pretty, I mean handsome!
Your reply cracks me up! "soliciting sex"!!
When we are inbetween roosters, they squat for my son (who is almost 10) and he knows they want to be mated. He has told people he is "mating" them when he pets their backs! "NO!! You are not mating them, you are petting them! Not the same!!"
I love it! It is great she's able to raise chicks, she was meant for it!
We had a wonderful BO who did the same thing. She had 3 of her own and when the we only a couple days old, I got my shipment of meaties. She accepted them under her wing along with the older chicks! Fantastic mother...
