I will be processing our first rooster today. I have been reading on here, watching you tube videos etc. I have decided to go with the pvc pipe cutters, since I feel most comfortable knowing the head is removed and the bird is dead. I keep reading about the importance of letting the bird bleed...
I hopes there would be some people popping up with genetic knowledge to help out, thank you! I didn’t know that about the yellow legs. So many things to learn!
I know there were buff orpingtons, Ameraucanas, silkies, red sex links, cochins, and maybe more but I’m not sure. The guy I got the eggs from had loads of roosters. I keep thinking they look like brahmas with the dark feathers, but they don’t have feathered feet. Is there another buff coloured...
These chicks cane from a Gold laced wyandotte mom and an unknown dad. Any clues as to what they are mixed with?
The one with more black on its neck is a rooster, the other one is a hen.
I have a 15 week old wyandotte cockerel who started crowing a month or so ago, and over the past few days Ive noticed him mating with one of our young (23 week old) hens. Could her eggs be fertile from this? The mating iis very “brief” but I think that is normal? (Im somewhat new to chickens)...
Your hen is gorgeous! I think she actually looks more gold-laced to me. The rooster looks blrw. Both lovely birds. I am raising both, and excited to see how mine feather out too.
They shouldn’t be fertilized no. We have a rooster but he is only 13 weeks old. I didn’t realize the float test was good for testing whether an egg was rotten or not, I assumed it was just for seeing how fresh it was. Thanks!
Thanks to everyone else for answering, makes me feel a bit better...
If a hen lays an egg in a coop, how long is it good for? Sometimes we miss one and find it a few days to a week later. Wondering if they are still ok to eat. Also, we are going away for a week and are wondering if we can still eat the eggs we lay when we get back?
I thought I’d update this (I hate never finding out the answer on threads!). It was indeed a pullet. She started laying a couple months ago and is now brooding some chicks. I wasn’t certain until I got that first egg though!
Any chance the blue lace wyandotte is a hen? It is 4.5 weeks old. The comb is getting a but pinkish, but not nearly as much as the other one shown, which Im sure is a roo.
