    Eggs with very soft shells..?

I've had two of these weird eggs over the past week except the shells were a bit harder and don't split open. These girls have been laying for maybe 3 weeks now at the most, so they're fairly new. You know what I'm realizing? Eggs are weird!

can you put a fake egg in...

I have wooden eggs in with my new layers and today is the first day they both laid in the nest rather than on the concrete or a patio chair And both new eggs were snuggled right up to that wooden egg.

    wacky egg week

All of the sudden my girls started laying like crazy, even in the cold and wet of winter! My RIR is slowly becoming more regular at laying, but still does it with a lot of drama. My Ameraucanas just started laying. I got 4 green eggs this week and one tiny rosy brown one (that I thought was...

    OMG - I got a green one!

I have two Ameraucanas and one lays green, the other a rosy brown. Now I've got a bee in my bonnet for a blue egg layer!

    Bantams and standards?

Same here, I have two bantams and two standards and the bantams are totally alpha. They really let the standards know who is boss!

how long between first egg and the next?

My remaining bantam RIR laid her first egg almost 2 weeks ago. Today she laid her second. She seems to have a very hard time laying. Today it took between 2-3 hours and our OEG alpha hen was going nuts. If she didn't lay eggs I'd think she was a rooster! Last week we got 2 Ameraucana pullets...

    any bantams need homes? socal

I'd like two bantam girls to keep my remaining two hens company. I'm really interested in dark or colored egg layers, but am open to whatever is out there. Thanks!

    identification please?

She's definitely a hen - my only egg-layer! We got her from someone who got her from the pound and rehabbed her - she was in bad shape and pecked at a lot. They thought she was a RIR but we added two RIRs to our flock and she's obviously different. A mix is definitely possible. Thanks for your...

    egg-bound and won't pass - UPDATE

I tried the Prep H overnight because her cloaca was so swollen already. I was hoping to minimize tissue swelling in case that made it easier for the egg to pass. I wonder if the end of the egg was still attached to the end of her reproductive tract? I could NOT put my finger around the end of...

    scaly leg mites!

In finding and posting to this board the other day when my little RIR bantam became egg-bound, I realized through the wealth of information here that our older chicken - another craigslist freebie, our first chook, in fact - has a terrible case of scaly leg mites! I really thought that's the way...

    egg-bound and won't pass - UPDATE

Thanks for all the info. I was up until nearly 4AM reading everything and it seems we've done all we can other than breaking the egg. Mineral oil, Prep H, calcium, warm baths...it's just not happening. She's still doing okay but tiring out and obviously uncomfortable when a "contraction" comes...

    egg-bound and won't pass - UPDATE

UPDATE: She didn't make it. We tried everything we had available to us, but the egg broke inside her and she couldn't expel the rest so we had to put her down. Thanks for the advice. This is the first hen we've lost. We've only had 3 backyard hens since this summer and the two little ones (which...
