Ok, I had to do this myself. I was one of the unfortunate people who got sick chicks early this spring. I had to put not one, but three down. It didn't easier, but I guess in a way it did.
First of all I will share my rough first attempt. Snapping or wringing the neck didn't work as well with...
The only thing I can think of without more details is 1 month is really young to be outside. They need pretty consistent 90 degree temps, day and night, at that age.
Anything weird with their poop? Any signs of loose or red stool?
You have a lamp on, but how close is it? Any actual...
OK, I have two EE's that are about 8 weeks old. I was confident they are both hens until lately.
They now have a noticeable difference in the comb size. This has been a fairly fool proof way to tell them apart by this age with other breeds in the past, but from what I see the EE's can have...
Well they all made it through the heat wave. I basically set up a swamp cooler type deal. A deep tray of ice with fan blowing across it.
They were HUGE though, the processor kinda laughed at me when I dropped them off because I had two HUGE boxes with only two birds in each. All the other...
I also started giving them things while they were still in the brooder, two -three weeks (with grit). They would get half their food on a laid open paper bag, once they hunted and pecked for that they got the rest of the food in a bowl. Then I just tossed the now poopy bag in the compost. I also...
So I have 4 very fat and happy Cornish crosses that are 12 weeks. I have really pushed the envelope on their age, but I did all the things neccesary to "slow them down" so to speak.
They really are active, no leg issues, still chase each other around etc.
My problem is they are scheduled at...
Well I feel better, mine are doing GREAT by all reports.
I did 5 Cornish X, first time for meat birds at my house.
One died at about 7 weeks, but it was alway behind the others, I wasn't shocked.
The other 4 are 12 weeks old and going to the processor Saturday. They are HUGE. But no heart...
Question, first photo, top right corner. What breed is the yellow chick? I have one that looks exactly like it that was a freebie and I am not 100% sure what it is. I assume Brahma or Cochin, but it isn't "built" like my other cochin chick. Mine is really cute, but I am worried it is a rooster...
My only rooster, Leonard, didn't really get his crow worked out until he was 3 or 4 months old. For like two months we just said it was broken, or he had forgotten the cock part of cock a doodle doo. It really sounded like he was choking at first.
I don't give them anything extra until they are 2-3 weeks old, but that's just me being overly cautious.
After that I have given
Oats
Yogurt
Chick scratch
Chick grit
Clumps of grass/sod from the yard (that causes the chick soccer match)
Clean Dandelions from the lawn
Greens
Received 03/03
25 chicks ordered (I took 15 of the 25)
Mine are
[2] Buff Orpingtons
[2] Partridge Cochins
[4] Araucanas
[1] Barred Rock
[1] Freebie that i think is a Brahma
[5] Cornish X
All fine on arrival
Symptoms, sitting on haunches, poor balance (falling over when attempting to walk...
I wonder if you ended up with a sex link situation. It will be interesting if it turns out that most pullets look one way as chicks and cockerels the other color scheme. You may have to do only one batch/cross at a time to determine which is from which cross.
I can't seem to sort through this all, has any one else actually gotten a positive test result? This post went from 2 pages to 13 in 24 hours and there seems to be only two posts with actual test results.
Can we hash out the details under a different topic? As one with sick chicks I really...
