I posted last week about me loosing a hen and my roo to a fox and so we decided to give our other hen away (she's a naked neck). My friend has 4 hens (not sure of their age but just started laying) and she has only had them for 3 weeks. We took her over on Saturday and everything was great...
I posted yesterday that we lost our roo and 1 hen to foxes yesterday. Very upsetting. I have 1 hen left (she's a naked neck) and she's very freaked out. She won't go near the coop and has been at our front door since yesterday afternoon (I did put her in the coop to sleep). I am going to...
thanks for the kind words. i know that i should not get so attached, but i loved them, they are so amazing and cool and eat from my hand, etc... i hope that you are right about 2 being unusual to loose in a 3 hour period. I also find it so amazing that a fox could take it without any feathers...
well...i hope you are right. not sure that both would go together, since Lefty is disabled...but my fingers are crossed that you are right and that they come home tomorrow. i'm very sad.
are you serious or joking! Not funny. my roo is handicaped, when I got him (a farmer gave him to us) his leg was disfigured and he limps, doesn't move fast, can't scratch, so he's not just going to hobble away. And Rhoda no way. She is down by our door every day at 6pm waiting for her...
Today we came home (were gone from noon - 3pm) and our hen Fanny was standing by the front door, looking a bit shell-shocked. Where was Rhoda, my other hen, who is always by here side. And my roo? Went up to the coop and they were gone, no feathers, nothing, they are just gone! I'm sitting...
so just read about a feral cat? Is this possible? 2 days ago we saw this black cat around our house, never seen it before and let the dog out to chase it away. But would a feral cat kill a big roo and a big hen?
I am here with tears in my eyes. was gone for 3 hours and came home to 1 hen, standing by our front door - shell shocked. my rooster and other hen are gone, no feathers either. she's the only one left. don't see hawks and they free range in the forest by the house...maybe a fox, although i...
thanks to everyone for their suggestions...the housesitter keeps coming up. But we live in rural france. Not in a neighborhood we live in the country in another country. we don't know people who housesit, just doesn't happen around here. So that is out.
The big quesiton is: Can i leave...
HiDelight - you are very lucky. we live in rural france and don't have many near neighbors. thus nobody to stay at the house or anyone to come over just to open and shut the door.
i'm going away on a friday morning and will return saturday night. our chickens are free-range. we don't have any neighbors near us that can take care of the birds. can i leave them in the coop friday and sat until Sunday morning or is that just horrible for them (making sure there is plenty...
Ah - thank you so much. Did the test and ALL of them sat on the bottom...so they are all fresh. That's my girl.
What does "going broody" mean (sorry I'm a new chicken owner)
