Hi Everyone,
Thank you for your advice. We've had 3 nights in the negatives with -13 being the coldest (we never did hit -20, which is good). The mornings have been -5, -8, -11 and the girls seem to prefer being on their outside roost rather than inside in their insulated coop. They really...
Opps, sorry- they are 7 months old and in good health. I'm assuming as the temps drop gradually, they grow more feathers to deal with the colder weather. But for a 50 degree drop in temps, I'm assuming they haven't had the time to grow enough feathers to handle the extreme cold.
It's way too early for us to be getting -20F night time lows. It may happen in February but that is also rare. Unfortunately, we didn't check the weather until last night and the -20f weather will hit Wednesday- 2 nights time. The cold snap will last at least a week with daytime temps in...
I have 5 chickens and my buff orpington gets picked on by the other 4. They were all raised together from day 1 (April). I have an odd pecking order among them- no one bird is the top, but buff is definitely at the bottom.
She was the first to lay in August. But, she has stopped laying for...
Hi,
We are new to chickens/chicks. Have 5 of different breeds in a brooder. They are about 2.5 weeks old right now. At some point, 4 of our birds have been freaking out, rolling around in the shavings, and not able to walk for a spurt of time. This usually happens to one at a time. The...
Above the Clouds- thanks. You are right in that bears are moving in closer to urban areas due to the drought. Our only hope here, and this is mean, is that there is about 1 mile of houses before we hit open space. If a bear was to meander through, we are betting that he'll hit some other...
Thanks everyone. We've abandoned the rebar idea and are instead going to enclose the run fully- ground and all. We plan to use welding wire (or welded wire) buried underground, covered with a layer of dirt and then 3-4" of sand. When/where or how the welded wire will meet the hardware cloth...
What is the smallest space predators can squeeze through? We have foxes, skunks, opossums, raccoons, cats, and of course rats and mice and all the things that fly. I doubt we can protect against mice and rats, but we were thinking of pounding rebar into the ground about 6" deep around a...
Hi All,
I've looked through several coops on this site- what would any newbie do without it... At this point, we have an idea of things needed, and things desired, but can't seem to get started with the planning. We obviously have to move fast since the chicks will need a home in a month or...
Thanks! Didn't think about access doors. The plastic around the hardware cloth is a good idea too. While we can have sunny days in the winter, they can still be windy.
I finally got the o.k. on chickens after a year of begging. I'm hoping for 4-5. We live in Boulder, CO and have a typical backyard (full property is 1/8 an acre. It's extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter, but dry. We have strong winds in the winter too (can get up to 75mph but...
