Thanks for the replies. The third chick did die but the first one is doing fine. Yes, I believe the momma knew what she was doing when the egg was separated from her and I just interferred with the process. (But I would try again if the need arose)
Found new hatchling and her/his egg a foot away from the hen while she still sat on trying-to-hatch egg, the baby was cold and curled up. Thought it was dead but then it moved. Brought it to the house and placed under a heat lamp. Any other suggestions? Any help greatly appreciated. First...
The other eggs haven't hatched yet...but when i picked one up a while ago...it cheeped! I have been giggling ever since. I am learning something all the time having this group of feathered cluckers. Bought some chick starter food today to give them.
There won't be the same 2 kind of chicks...
Thanks for the quick reply. I will change the nesting box arrangement tomorrow then. Maybe the other 2 will have hatched by then. I really didn't think this was going to work. Hen went broody so I grabbed a couple of 3 eggs and put them under her. What a trip!
First time allowing a brood hen to sit on eggs. The first one hatched a little while ago and there are 2 more eggs under her. What do I do with it? Should I take Mom and chick out of the nest to an easier surface for the chick to walk? Does the chick know to get feed? It seems so clumsy...
Have a Buff Orpington (among others) who has decided to brood. She seems to be in a trance of sorts. Will she eat or drink during this phase? If I let her go ahead and sit on eggs will she come out of it once chicks hatch? So far I have separated her from the other hens as she wasn't letting...
