im thinking about buying from mypetchicken...

I'm going to order from MPC this spring. I was going to go with McMurray, but I like MPC's ability to ship less than 25, and sex silkies! I searched a lot of posts on this forum, and overall most people seemed satisfied. I do not expect to get show quality, but for my first foray into...

My New COOP!!!!! What does everyone think??????

Beautiful cat! I have a main coon also, but she's much smaller, probably a mix because I got her as a feral kitten. But she looks exactly like your guy. They are so sweet. I like your coop also, I especially like how the run looks more substantial and part of the coop (which it seems to be)...

    Shutters on my coop windows?

shutters will help, but you might as well just make storm windows so you don't put the chickies in the dark. A storm window you'll be able to fit tighter than shutters that will swing open and closed.

Can you do heated rabbit waterer's, for winter freezing temps? I like that idea

serious coop issues (Pictures are up page 2)

You can buy cable that is meant to melt snow on roofs. Just some wire that creates heat with the electric resistance, meant to be wet. Get some of that and lay it around on the ice, it will melt it, but not in a single day.

    marsh daisy

Yes, thanks! I am also looking at welsummer, and am glad they seem to be available. they are both quite beautiful! I saw the picture of them in the book called "choosing and keeping chickens". The hens seem to have this beautiful green tone in with the browns. For now, it seems Welsummers...

    marsh daisy

So I'm going through books as I plan my first chickens this spring, and fell in love with a picture of a marsh daisy hen. It doesn't seem like this is a readily available breed? Does anybody know where to get them? I am not ready to hatch eggs, I'm looking for day olds. maybe in a couple of...

    ventilation, a century ago

I'm in the pre-planning stages for building my first coop this spring. I just picked up a book called "fresh air poultry houses", written in the 20's. When's the last time I read a book from the twenties or before? Probably high school, english lit, or something. so it's pretty cool from...

    Chickens and snow

Does anyone cover the pop door with a piece of fabric or plastic, so that it doesn't let the cold air right through?

Advice please, How to deal with the neighbor and their dogs Update pg5

I even keep a can in my nightstand. I'd rather spray an intruder, than shoot someone and find out it wasn't an intruder! It is great stuff. Yes, even if you could have her see you shooting blanks at her dogs! THAT might wake her up.

Advice please, How to deal with the neighbor and their dogs Update pg5

Bear spray would work better than a bb gun for a deterrant. Bear spray - the pepper spray that will go about 20-30 yards, powerfully, and you don' t need to be a good shot. Just make sure you aren't shooting upwind! It would likely be enough of a deterrent that she will notice the pain her...

Can We Poll for an Organic Section?

Quote: wow, I wish that happened to me. I can eat just as much organic chocolate as traditional!

The first two are out! Update pg 3w/PICS

Oh my gosh, this is dangerous. I suppose I should plan a space into my coop for a setting hen. Pretty likely I'll go that route. I don't tend to moderate much and I sure love my animals. Two days ago I didn't know what a silkie was, now I can't wait to get two!

    Tell me about silkies

Oh, so sweet! I think I want a buff and a splash. what's the best place to get silkies from? I want pullets only, and so far it sounds like my pet chicken is the only place that does that? I'd rather support breeders than high-volume hatcheries though. If those silkies and polish are in...
