You don't need to cover in chicken wire. You can cover in aviary netting, which is different. I have a 50'x100' run and it only cost me about $100 to cover the entire thing. Most people have a much smaller run.
I'd be very interested to see what happens with this combination. I can assume what would happen but sometimes you just don't know until the animal is in front of you. I have the "ingredients" for this experiment but as with all things chicken, nothing is fast and time is money.
Chickens are prey animals. You need to earn their trust in a manner that doesn't violate their personal bubble. A good way to do this is to offer food from your hand. Further than that, some chickens will never want to be your friend and it is your responsibility to respect your animal's wishes...
There is absolutely no reason to think that only the "top" brooder is adjustable. These units are actually individual brooders that simply stack, so they should all be exactly the same. Which follows my suspicion that it's user error.
The chicks at my TC are in the new brooders and they are bright eyed and active, just as I'd expect chicks to be. From what I can tell, every time someone says they see dead chicks it's right after the stores set up the new brooders which likely means they didn't set the heat correctly at first...

Last year I kept my small flock of Australorp hens in with my Hamburgs and decided to hatch a couple of eggs from the Australorp hens out of curiosity. The other chicks developed as expected, but I've kept this one cockerel around because he perplexes me. Would this insinuate that one of my...
Unfortunately veterinarians are not experts in the color genetics field. I'm a veterinary professional and the education given has nothing to do with color or breeds. Most vets really don't know much about breeds at all unless they also happen to be breeders with continued education, and most...
Unfortunately I don't know of a single "comfort retriever" breeder that is producing stable, health tested dogs with good temperament. There are ways to mix breeds responsibly, but I don't know any "comfort retriever" breeders that are doing it that way. :(
Poodles are awesome dogs! They can be a bit fussy but they're very cool. I've been waiting for the right time to get one myself.
There is a wonderful poodle breeder that has educational videos on the TikTok (I know) app. Her page is called CrystalCreek.
