So, my duck went broody. Which is fine except she built the nest in the wrong coop and I need to move it. The problem is that this monstrosity she built is best described as a volcano nest. Its about 2ft by 2ft and might be almost as deep. How do I move it without it falling apart? Or do I just...
Thank you both so much for the pictures. It really helps. Guess I will wait and see what we get. They are only a few days old with more yet to hatch. Do either of you notice any issues from the beak? I had never even heard of this duck until we got these eggs.
Sorry for the late response, been busy with the ducklings. Yes 9 was that one. 13, now named Lucky, almost had the same fate. Blow for blow exact same, pipped at wrong end and had a second air cell. But with 13 I knew to look. Lucky hatched in my hands. We have had a bunch pip at the wrong end...
So we have a backyard mix of eggs we hatched. Long story short we were told there was a good possibility that some of our eggs could be hookbill. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me how old the ducklings need to be before I might spot this trait. I tried looking online and it seems...
The egg is great so far. Has begun to enlarge the hole and happily peeps. However I now have two eggs with bruises and I was trying to read up on it but I lost the thread.
Pulled a small piece of shell and the little immediately started trying to push its bill out. I didn't pull or pierce the white membrane, it already had made a pinhole. Should I have opened it more?
What is chewing? I don't want to mess this up. Everyone else to far has pipped on the big end. How long without progress should I wait? Do I need to pull the egg and candle it?
My duck eggs began externally pipping yesterday. This morning one of the larger eggs has an external pip at the wrong end.. What do I do? New to all this.
I should have added we are currently either 13 or 14 days out from hatch date. We did have 7 losses, but currently have 23 that are still growing. Are there any developmental issues that could arise from that or is that typically when the egg is further along? I already dealt with a wry neck...
When I first got the chicks home my ducklings where still inside and they were very curious of the new peeping thing. The brooders sat next to each other so I was worried they might hurt the chicks just trying to be curious. So the chicks spent a day in a clear plastic tote, then I hardware...
