    possibly a rooster?

So, I dont have pictures, for which I apologize, but I wonder if anyone can guess is my 10 week old Partridge plymouth might not be a little girl. So far, her comb is about a quarter of an inch, and little nubs of a wattle, but pictures of PRs seem like even pullet have decent sized combs and...

Had to bury my 19 chicks today.....

So sorry for you and your loss. Loosing pets is always a hard experience. I hope you can train your dog to accept them.

how long can they be in the brooder?

Is it a big enough size where the box can be moved outside for them? Though, 6 weeks does bring me to mid May, we should have plenty of time hopefully. Thanks

how long can they be in the brooder?

So, work on the brooder is 50%ish complete (it depends on whether you ask me or the perfectionist building it), and I am curious how long they can stay in it, as it seems like progress on the coop with be delayed a bit longer as I'm not allowed to walk yet. The brooder is 4'x4'x2'. I shall...

    2 questions

I have 2 questions about my chicklets: 1) when does pasty butt stop? Two of my chicks, the BO and Campine, need to be cleaned at least twice a day because poop just sticks to them. Initially it didn't seem to block their vent, but it builds up and then might, I don't take the risk. They are...

    Quiet Chicks

When I first got mine they peeped their little heads off, and the first few times they were silent I had to go check on them to make sure that they were still OK. Now, they are silent most of the time, or at least what occasionally sounds like soft contented peeping, unless one is annoyed and...

    Starting a garden

I live in a rural town, on a decent lot with just my boyfriend, so it makes sense to supplement store feed with fresh grown stuff. You can probably grow greens for yours in a box attached to their coop, if you had room for that. that way they can stare out the window at the tastiness, mehehe.

Im no good at naming, help me!

I pick out a naming scheme for animals. For instance, my cats have names that have meaning in Gaelic (except for ginger, but an ex named her), the majority of my dogs have been named out of the Lord of the Rings, my rats have all been named after wizards, and my chickens are all named after...

    HI! From CT

Hey, I'm Lyndsay from North East CT and completely new to chickens. In January, my boyfriend and I decided to move from renting an apartment to renting a house, with very easygoing do whatever landlords, who agreed that it was OK to have chickens, and even requested eggs! So, I did a bunch of...

    Starting a garden

excellent suggestions, thanks! And Carrie Lynn, seems like a perfect plant for fall, perfect! lizch - a year ago I was sitting in my first apartment with my boyfriend with a cat and 4 rats, and thought that having a large courtyard was perfect. Now, we've got a house with a yard and a dog...

    Funny Peep show (Picture)

I am so glad I saw this picture yesterday, because otherwise today I would have had a heart attack. It had been quiet for a long while, so I decided to go check on the babes. 3 of them were sprawled out like that on the bottom of the cage, while the other 3 were all snuggled up on the shelf...

    Starting a garden

Thanks for the advice. Though I am rather baffled by "corn salad." I could probably grown corn that would satisfy chickens though, and while looking I'll look for that. And lots of greens, that's great to know as they are easy enough I don't think I could mess it up. I tried growing lettuce...
