I've raised both before, and trust me I know about the meat bird poop. The last group I raised was 30 --NEVER AGAIN with my set up.
My brooder is 4ft x 4ft with 2 heat lamps. I was thinking of starting them together for maybe 2 weeks and then moving the standard hens to brooder of their own. I...
I posted this in the meat bird section, but thought I might get more input over here.
I'm going to get a small group of meaties (15) the first part of March and would like to add a few (3-4) hens to my aging layer flock.
Can I start the meaties and standards together for a few weeks?

A few folks asked for a video showing how to pith a chicken. This is the video that I used to gather the strength to kill my first chicken (actually it was a nasty rooster that had to go) I think they do an awesome job showing that the killing process does not need to be graphic.
Someone...
I'm on my second go around on cornish xs. The first time was easy, and I was very happy with the results. This time I'm raising 30 meaties and have noticed that one of the birds is growing much slower that the other. Currently it is maybe 1/3-1/2 the size of the other birds. At first, I...
I have 6 hens that are about 14 months old. There are feathers every where, but one of the barred rocks is going through a prety severe molt and appears to be going broody at the same time. Has anyone had this happen?

What kind of chickens are they? Just so happens I'm looking for a few additional laying hens and I will be in Jackson this weekend.
I can't take anymore roosters though. As it is my flock is out of balance.
They died either while I was working or shortly there after. Both times I discovered them when I went to let them out to free range. Their environment didn't change - I was actually adding on for 11 new arrivals.
I have had two chickens just up and die - not at the same time. In fact about 2 months apart. They showed no signs of being sick.
Both times is happened on the days when I was working on expanding their chicken coop and was using a pneumatic nail gun.
Is it possible the noise from the nail...
Thank you all for your great advise - my broody BO I think is broke. I followed everyones advise and placed her in a wire cage for 3 days and I think it did the trick as she was not in the nest box this morning.
My question is how long will it take for her to resume laying? She was broody for...
Thanks - she is a BO which I understand can be very persitent. I'll be patient and keep her in the broody buster. Is it o.k. to let her out for a few hours to free range with the flock?
I have porcelain bantam roo that is just about 8 weeks old and has been crowing now for two weeks. Cracks me up the guy is about the size of a pigeon and his crow not very loud at all. He's a cute little fella - about a third of the sze of the standard hens that were born at the same time. I...
A have a broody hen that I have seperated from the flock. She is in a 3'x4' house with wire caged bottom. How long is it going to take to bust her broodiness.
She has been in there 2 full days. Last night I let her out to free range with the other ladies and she joined the group. This is a...
