Have you ever had a nice rooster?

I have a rooster that is coming on a year old. He was one of 3 roosters we hatched from chicks and the only one who got to stay. He was never aggressive toward me last summer and was very respectful to my hens. I live in New England so we’re finally getting out of winter. Over the winter he...

My hen keeps having a problem with her vent?

I have a BO hen that is looking kinda like the top photo. she gets a little pasted up too. She never grew a tail, and had issues with pasty butt as a chick. I have given her a warm bath once a week ago to try to clean her up, but never thought of Epsom salts. It's not overly red or anything...

Don't know what breed or gender you have? Click here!

So it's possible for a rooster to feather out the same way as the hens do early on?

So with a bachelor pad, can I still free range them together or do I have to keep them seperately at all times? I'm very new to this whole thing I'd love more chickens but I think my husband might be less than thrilled if I got 10 more birds

Thanks! Should I expect the other two to start crowing soon? They're Cochins or at least part Cochin. Any recommendation to how many hens I should have per roo? I've only got 8 birds total with these 3 included in the 8. My kids would be devastated if they went away so I'd like to avoid that :(

I'm trying to decide if two of these birds are pullets or cockerels. They're 10 1/2 weeks old. The first one is definitely a cockerel. He's crowing, getting pointed saddle feathers and feathered extremely slowly compared to the other chicks in the flock. This next one is one we're trying to...

    Rooster?

I've asked about one of these birds awhile ago in another thread, but I wanted to Check in now that they're older. They're about 10 1/2 weeks old and there's only two I'm unsure of. This is "Cleo" or maybe "Leo" if she turns out to be a he. She feathered out rather quickly as a chick and...

    Does only one rooster crow?

I've been wondering this too. I've got 3 10 weeks old chickens that have obvious comb and wattles that are red. One is DEFINITELY a cockerel "hei hei" (my kids love moana) crows morning noon and night. Well I have two others that I'm still questioning. My black one "Cleo or Leo" doesn't crow...

Can someone help me identify these breeds please?

I posted in another forum and got one opinion based solely on comb and wattle but I have read this isn't the most reliable indicator of gender. This chick at 7 weeks old is the one in question. I hadn't questioned for a minute that it was a she because it feathered quickly and evenly like all...

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Anyone able to confirm if this is a pullet or a cockerel? I've been pretty certain it's a pullet but recently I've seen "her" facing off with our cockerel. He's seeming to have an entirely different posture than the rest, however this chicken in question seems to have a similar posture to our...

Can someone help me identify these breeds please?

There's only one with 5 toes. The "rir's" I suspected weren't what they claimed. Thanks for the confirmation!

Can someone help me identify these breeds please?

I am new to chicken raising and we received 5 chicks from my sons preschool that they hatched in class. I was told that they were made up of Sussex, dot kings, Cochins and a few mystery breeds. I got an additional 3 elsewhere that claim to be Rhode Island reds that I want to confirm to be true...
