I, too, ended up here looking for answers about this strange phenomenon. My two 2 year old Ameraucanas both do this to anyone who will let them during roost time. Usually when I check the camera a few hours later, everyone is sorted, but during the initial roosting stage this occurs every night...
Update: My girl has passed away. From an unrelated reproductive malfunction this morning. Both my prairie bluebell eggers have now passed from the same issue. Perhaps this tumor wasn't her only one? No idea. Rest in peace little one.
Update: Her sister from the same hatching just passed today from reproductive malfunction as well. She went quickly, before we could get her to the vet even. If this isn't genetic i want a refund on my bachelor's degree. Sigh. None of my other girls have ever had so much as a cold... one had...
Omg that's exactly it! It was like the red ping pong ball in the one Pic but had gotten squished. So it's a follicle. Huh. I'd never have guessed that. I do have a hen who has started acting similar to egg bound: in/out of box all day, droopy, reduced intake, depressed. Last night she laid a...
Found it this morning beneath their roosting perch. No one is behaving abnormally or sick. No blood on any vent. Never seen anything like this before. It is jelly- solid texture.
So my sweet girl completely intended to peck my eyeball when she flew up to my shoulder the other day... what a wee $h*tling... I don't allow shoulder chickens anymore now... 😳
Also- pink eye is really awful.
I second the Americauna suggestion! Love my Ameraucana girls. Those cheeks tho!! Never gone broody and pretty blue eggs. Very friendly and want to cuddle.
I've been wondering this same thing after experiencing many issues with my two Prairie Bluebell Eggers. One got a weird tumor that required surgical removal but hasn't gone away... she's still alive and laying but she's only 9 months old so no idea what the future holds for her. Her sister had...
That's a really good observation, I hadn't noticed before but looking back i think you are 💯 right on the money with this. I've experienced this as well but never really paid attention enough to put into words, but this explains a lot.
Mine do this when they moult as well. They don't seem to want anyone to touch them when they are all prickly, much less be pecked or jostled as part of the usual night routine, and the best spot to avoid that is the nest boxes. I usually just let them go in to avoid stress... then after dark i...
I came here to see if I could find out when golden comets will resume egg laying 😆 but I stayed for the fun/comedy LOL. My GC has had 1 season, first egg at about 17 weeks old...started her moult at the end of July, so we haven't had an egg from her since then. Before she moulted at the end of...
Oh my gosh yes... I've lived in the desert and in Alaska, where the growing season lasted 2 months but enjoyed 24ish hours of sun... it's been quite the learning experience trying to grow things in both extremes! I'm still wondering how people keep chickens alive in those temperatures though...
