    Best way to harvest feathers

I'm about to dispatch a very aggressive rooster. I want to save his feathers, particularly the hackles. I've read about skinning and preserving the hide, as well as other methods. I'm considering dipping in hot water, washing the feathers, then putting them in a pillow case and throwing them in...

    New additions to our flock

These are our newest pullets. Many of our hens had stopped laying, so we added these seven - three Black Marans, two Salmon Faverelles, a Cinnamon Queen, and a Golden Laced Wyandotte. Three of our Ameraucanas disappeared two weeks ago, so now we're down to just two or three eggs a day! These...

    Missing Toenail

One of my girls broke a toenail and it is now missing. My daughter just found her outside laying down in the snow. She seems happy but her foot is a bit swollen. What's the best remedy?

Are eggs good from a hidden nest?

Actually, we have a blue andalusian. She's the only one who hasn't started laying - to my knowledge.

Are eggs good from a hidden nest?

I have six hens but I am fairly sure these are all from the same one. I think all the others lay brown eggs and these are white.

Are eggs good from a hidden nest?

Our white leghorn started laying but it seemed kind of random - we'd find an egg in a horse stall, or on the back porch next to the door - then nothing. For the past two days she started hiding. This morning we found her spot with 22 eggs in it! I am doing the cold water test to see which ones...

Types of feed for different chickens

I have a large run with three sections and a coup in each. My largest is for my laying hens, which are actually only about 3 months old at this point. I started them on a non-medicated chick starter. They did great. All were very healthy, no pasty butt, etc as the grew. In a separate pen, I...

    Outdoor housing for chicks?

I have a few Polish chicks in the kitchen right now. They're about two weeks old. I would like to move them outside, bu it's supposed to get down to 19 degrees at night later this week. They are in a wooden box brooder with a lid made of hardware cloth. They have their heat lamp and they're...

    Chickens and ducklings together?

Two days ago we bought two ducklings, and last night we bought two polish chicks. The woman we bought the chicks from said we couldn't put them with the ducklings, because ducklings kill chicks. I had never heard such a thing before, but stopped at the hardware store to get some hardware cloth...

    Sick little Polish

We brought home two buff Polish chicks this afternoon. One is lively and happy, the other looks like it isn't doing quite as well. They are both eating and drinking, but one seems a little... sluggish. They are in my kitchen under the table with a heat lamp on them. Anything I should do?
