Yes, it is legal to keep chickens in Providence! There is a limit of 6 chickens and no roosters. Hopefully Cluck! will be open soon and you can purchase some chicks from them.
The upside of painted or linoleum floors are that they are easier to clean (poop doesn't sink into the wood). Also, if you use a light color, it will be easier to spot critters like mites that may find their way in.

Phew...just double checked the ordinance and the projo was incorrect. The ordinance is correct and says that all chicken hens must be confined within the coop from sunset to sunrise.
Try looking at your city's website. I just looked quickly but didn't see anything but I'm sure a more thorough search should yield a better outcome. If that fails, try calling city hall and see if they have an online source of code. My city had something called municode. Look in the zoning...

Last night the Cranston City Council's Ordinance Committee voted in favor of our backyard chicken ordinance, 5 votes to 1. Next Monday we go for a vote by the full City Council. Wish us luck!
