    What breed?

She just layed a light cream colored egg and I was told when we bought her, she was a cinnamon queen. A quick google search told me they were wrong. I was also surprised she laid because her ears are not red yet.

Quote: I think the store egg is a large. Either way Bunnys first egg was not small. Dotsie is our SLW. Oh and don't mind the take out container I used as a background. I couldn't find anything else in my excitement.

First Egg. YESSSSSSSS! Our chicks were hatched the end of May and here 6 1/2 months (205 days) later, a medium beautiful blue egg. We decided not to artificially light the coop and let nature takes it course. We figured it wouldn't be until spring but lo and behold to our wonderful surprise, one...

If its the same lady in PG that we bought Barnevelders from in June... be careful. Uneducated as we were (and she was as we found out), we ended up with 3 barnies and a welsummer. Bummer because we paid triple the cost for a welsummer and one of the barnies had a crooked beak. In general, do...

Dog has jumped my fence and killed chickens on 2 occasions

So sorry to hear. I did the same thing and turned the owner away because I was so upset. Now I'm upset because I cant find them to pay for my birds. Replacing the birds with new ones does help with the loss.

Quote: This is one shot of the hen house. It is not finished but at the good enough stage. We plan on increasing the run size and adding electricity with accessories. This one islooking t the nesting boxes from the inside. The picture is old and Ive added a few things to make the boxes a...

    Silent layer

Our Wyandotte is sneaky as ever with her egg laying. Its our first layer so we want to catch her in the act. We've tried to listen for her laying and an after lay announcement LOL. NOTHING!. So I found her in the coop and knew she was about to go I sat there for like 45 minutes looking through...

Quote: The ordinance allows one "farm animal"(chickens, rabbit, other fowl) per 1,600 sq ft of your lot size with a minimum lot size of 8,000 sq ft. How many am I allowed???? Don't ask and I wont tell.

    heated waterers??

For some reason my chickens will step on the edge of any feeder and knock it over. If I put a pie tin on the metal heated base they would find a way to step on the edge and spill it. I have to find a way to fasten it so it wont tip. This will be my first winter with chickens and I have to admit...

    Culled???

I'm still laughing about this. I'm trying to learn the lingo of things farming... I read culled more than once in different threads thinking people were using it as a funny made up word to use instead of "killed". Saying "Culled" with a redneck back woodsie twaaaaaaang sounds very similar to how...

    Stray Dogs Again!@#@!!!*

So sorry to hear. I couldn't imagine all the birds gone. I came home 2 weeks ago to a dog still in our run. The dog got in but could't get out. Still cant figure how it happened. Killed 2 hens and the rest somehow made it into the hen house where the dog didn't venture. It was middle of the day...

    Utah!

I've been a lurker for about 15 weeks and finally made a decision to escalate my chicken knowledge base by asking a few questions here and there. We purchased our first round of chicks "officially" June 9th 2011 as that was the date of our city council hearing for farm animals in Kaysville...

Chicken LORE Project - Find & Submit Local Chicken Laws & Ordinances

I searched L.O.R.E and didn't see Kaysville UT. http://www.kaysvillecity.com/code.main.html Title 17 chapter 24. Lot size must be 8,000 sq ft or larger. One animal per 1,600 sq ft. I hope this is the format you are looking for.

I'm a chicken neighbor, needing advice...

Quote: I agree. I also believe some of the rules were "created" on a complaint driven basis. In my town we have a 15' rule from any structure inhabited by humans. This does not differentiate between the chicken owners home or the neighbors. I believe it has to do with the possible smell and...

    Fish for chickens?

I realize this is an old thread but I had to share my experience with feeding the girls fish. I put a fish carcass (fillet carcass) in the run for the girls to eat and they were terrified. They ran, flapped, screamed like their life depended on it. I really felt bad it scared them so much. I...
