I probably could, would have to figure out the logistics. Maybe the dogs would let me borrow a big crate? Thanks for your response, I will see if I can figure out which one it is.
Is this maybe something she won't grow out of?
These 12 girls were hatched mid-March, and have been laying since the very beginning of August. Early starters! I know for a fact that at least ten are laying. I have 4 americaunas, two SCB leghorns, 2 BO, 2 NH Reds and 2 GL Wyandottes. If there are any holdouts still not laying they are...
Cyndi, you might remember me as Greenhaven from Homestead.org. We got together once at canning time, but it was several years ago and I know you see a lot of faces at your place!
Oh, and darn it, where can I find info about the get-together?? I'm just a little slow this weekend...
Okay, read up a wee bit, and I guess the action of the birds jumping down from a higher perch can irritate a foot enough to be considered a cause. but it also seems that a lot of other factors can come into play with bumblefoot.
I would also ask about the bumblefoot. How does the height of the roosts affect having it or not?
To the OP: When I had my last flock my roosts were about three foot off the ground simply because that was the most convenient height to place it. Everyone did just fine at that height. If you...
To the OP: I am sure Joel himself will tell you that his methods will not work for everybody. That should be a given. It almost seems like you are taking Mr. Salatin's business personally.
There are whole communities of people, online and otherwise, who live close to the land, extremely...
How far in advance can we place orders? I am looking at starting chicks around the end of March, and BCM are one my list! I would vastly prefer to buy locally, of course...
I am a once-upon-a-time-er re-incarnated from Greenhaven to Longview. We have been on our new place for almost a year and a half and are FINALLY ready fro chickens again! Wahoooo! Gave away 20 laying hens back in 2006 when we sold our crappy place and moved to town. now back on five acres...
Thank you both! Apyl, I am pretty sure I did use paper towel at first. I can't really remember, but I never had any splayed legs. Thanks for the reminder! ChickenmanII, that is what I thought (about the bedding), but better to be safe than sorry, right?
I am aiming for the end of March to bring in chicks. I will probably order from Ideal or MMH because I have a very specific wish list, lol!
I remember that I put the chicks immediately onto newspaper in a tote, but it is so messy. How soon could they go onto cob or sawdust?
I may have as...
I have ordered three times from MMH and have never had a loss. I supposed the odds are in favor of it, eventually, but I have always been extremely pleased with the results. In fact, never lost a MMH bird of ANY age except by unfortunate battles with cars. RIP Sheba and Tubby.
Hmm.., well I am trying to find a away to justify allowing my birds to roam sometimes. Guess I would be hedging my bets with a LGD, but not guaranteeing safety.
Will an LGD deter hawks and other predatory birds? I sure would like to free-range (daytime of course) my up-and-coming chickens in the pasture but we are right on the edge of a 3,000 acre prairie.
ALSO-
Will coyotes scale a (short- think pasture) fence for chickens in the daytime?
We have a similar starling presence at our place, and of course the ubiquitous house sparrows. Can you shoot them inside a pole building without shooting through the walls/roofs?
