Hi Karen,
I'm sure it didn't hurt to clean his outer ears but it won't help. All the muck is stuck behind the eardrum, deep down in his head.
I'm wondering if that spot on his neck is an abscess draining from inside his head. Did he show improvement when the spot appeared ? It might be venting...
Hi Karen,
I hope Texas is doing better tonight. Here is a link that you might find useful https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/medicine-chart
Did you find any antibiotics?
Hi Blooie,
Thank you
I hope Karen would like to go in on an article.
That he is eating is very good news! Bobbi was a sloppy mess, they can't aim, she couldn't keep her head still long enough to aim.I just kept her wiped off as best I could and she cleaned herself up when she got better.
There isn't any info out there about ear infections in chickens. There...
Hi Karen,
Your poor rooster looks exactly as my Bobbi did and the cause was an inner ear infection. It's very treatable with antibiotics, rest and a little coddling.
Right now he is probably dehydrated, dizzy and nauseous. Try holding him upright and holding a spoon with water to his beak...
ivan3, thank you for bringing that link forward. I frequently get lost when a thread moves fast. I will dig into it this evening.
centrachid, In theory people should be able to learn it but they don't. Considering the number of people that are bitten by dogs and the fact that dog language is...
Ganjaroo, I hope your roo is doing better.
I have a few observations on behavior, both learned and genetic.
Pinning in parrots-chickens do it too. They have a very complex non-verbal communication system. They alter the color of their face/comb/wattles by blood flow, they posture and fluff...
Ducclelover10, While it's true that chickens don't have receptors for allergens that humans have (pollen, cats, ect) they are very sensitive to air quality. Their airways are easily damaged by things like ammonia ,car exhaust, ozone, smoke and industrial pollutants.
It may help her make it...

Their fees are quite reasonable, Dr. Peacock is very good with poultry.
Bobbi's test came back negative
I don't know what is available in Australia, maybe check with an Ag college? I'm darn sure they have good livestock vets but don't know how many poultry specialists they have.
And, the cost can vary tremendously. I'm in Indiana. I can schedule with the Purdue...
I'm hoping Casportpony's pathology paper can clear that question up.
She has considerable experience with Marek's that I don't. Reading about symptoms of someone else's birds on line is a very subjective thing . There have been plenty of posts that have left me scratching my head and others...
I do hope you can link the paper!
I think inner ear infections are seriously under diagnosed because there are no outward symptoms. There is no visible swelling or drainage and they can hide the pain . You don't see anything until they get dehydrated or loose their balance. Then, it's a long...
Since your pullet is responding to the antibiotics it could very well be an ear infection.
I had a hen in very bad shape make a full recovery .It took her 2 full rounds of antibiotics, 10 days each.
Try to make sure she is drinking and if you can, try putting a waterer up on bricks so she...
My silkie mixes are laying like clockwork and it has been a rough Winter. Their mother, Q, is a very good layer when she isn't broody. Their father was a large fowl EE .
I have one that dose that too. He is 8 months old and still sleeps like that ! Mighty Mouse looks like a wet dishrag flung on the clothesline when he roosts. He seems normal in every other way, super good with his pullets and healthy as can be.
The problem with sleeping like that is it left...
I had posted about my white eared Orps before with the same suggestion of Favus. I doubted it at the time and had it confirmed by a vet this Fall as not being Favus. It takes some pretty wet and unsanitary conditions to promote Favus . It presents with a widespread blotching of the face, head...
