    help planning our duck coop

We have 2 chickens now and a nice secure, predator coop and run for them. We plan to get ducks in the future and are wondering how to go about planning their coop and run area. We free range the chickens during the day and hope to do that with the ducks as well since we have about an acre. Our...

what's great and not so great about ducks?

We have two chickens who we love. We are considering raising ducks, as my hubby just found out he is allergic to chicken eggs. We hear ducks make very nutritious eggs, and that they are very good at eating slugs. We also hear that they don't scratch like chickens do; instead, they nibble. Then...

Best methods for moving our flock?

I should add that what I mean by cooped up is having access to a small run attached to their coop, as well as their coop.

Best methods for moving our flock?

We are moving across town. Our 2 chickens, Sammy and Buttercup, are coming along inside their coop. It will fit inside of our truck. Our new yard does not have adequate fencing so they will probably be cooped up for a week or so while we work that out. Do chickens get really stressed over...

is it better to put coop near tall trees or in the open?

We are in the process of moving to a more rural area. Right now our two chickens free range in the day time and have been totally safe in our suburban back yard. Our new home has tall trees on the west side, and an open area along the north. The perimeter of our new yard is fenced. We are mostly...

my 3 year old's favorite pet, Buttercup, is lethargic, droopy, with puffed up feathers, won't eat

Thanks for the concern about Buttercup...she sat in one spot all afternoon yesterday, resting. Around dusk she wandered around the yard and drank a lot of water. She had just pooped some watery stuff. We put a light in her coop last night to help her stay warm and prayed for her. Today, she...

my 3 year old's favorite pet, Buttercup, is lethargic, droopy, with puffed up feathers, won't eat

We have 2 chickens that are both a year and a half old. They usually range all over our city backyard during the day. We were camping for four days so the chickens were cooped up. They pace back and forth when they stay in their coop all day. They had plenty of food and water when we returned...

    What is normal hen pecking?

We have 2 chickens, a sicilian buttercup and a golden laced wyandotte. They are about 4 months old, raised together from a day or two old. They free range during the day in our fenced urban backyard (which is about 1000 square feet with grass, roses, fruit trees). They have access to food and...

Pregnant and concerned about catching something from chickens

We have 2 "chicks" who are about 10 weeks old. They spend their days roaming our small fenced backyard. Our 2 dogs protect them there. However, our dogs are also indoor dogs who enjoy spending time on our couch when they're not on guard duty. I'm concerned that they are lying in chicken poop...

5 week old golden laced wyandotte with reddish "comb"--boy or girl?

Here are some better pics of the comb area: For comparison with my sicilian buttercup: A little pink in the wattle area: Could some of the pinkness be normal for a Golden Laced Wyandotte female?

5 week old golden laced wyandotte with reddish "comb"--boy or girl?

Quote: Thanks! The chick actually has reddishness on the wattle area, and a slight bump there. It is 5 weeks old. How fast is fast development? What is lacing?

5 week old golden laced wyandotte with reddish "comb"--boy or girl?

We have 5 chicks but only one golden laced wyandotte. (S)he is the sweetest bird! And also much bigger than the others. Really hope it is a she so we can keep her AND keep our nearby neighbors as friends. Just added more pics! Scroll down...maybe 2nd page...

    Coop design for predator protection

I like elmo's idea! We live in the Northwest also and have seen hawks and raccoons around. We are building a stationary coop/run for starters and then a tractor so the chickens can "free range" when we aren't available to directly supervise.
