    ..look what happend.. UPDATES

I saw your update. I'm glad your step-dad is going to build a pen so your chickens will be safer. I apologize that I didn't realize that you were not an adult, and as such, probably didn't have the decision-making power to build a more secure enclosure or restrain the dog. Hope he gets it...

    ..look what happend.. UPDATES

I am a dog trainer as well, like FourPawz. I have five dogs, two of which are the top-ranked agility dogs in the country. As well-trained as they are, I would *never* trust them alone with the chickens - their prey drive is too strong. You can't be mad at them for doing something that they...

    What are your rooster's names?

Tally Whacker Napoleon Hedwig and the accidental cornish X we got was named Fatso until he was invited to dinner.

Where do you keep your brooders?

In the living room, in a huge (5' X 3' X 3') enclosure I made of wood, chicken wire, and a tarp. They are dusty, but I live on the windy prairie where it is dusty all the time anyway.

    Bedding question

The cedar oil in the chips irritates their lungs, making them more susceptible to respiratory illnesses. The same thing goes for pet mice, rats, etc.

    Pedipaw to trim and/or file rooster's nails/claws/spurs?

Being new to chickens, I don't know how tough a rooster's spurs are, but the Pedipaw doesn't work for bigger dogs. It wouldn't even touch my GSD mix's nails. I use a dremel with all of my dogs.

    Plastic hardware cloth?

I'm still in the building stages too. I'm planning to build the run with some leftover landscape timbers on the bottom. I'm going to put 2 X 4 welded wire on the outside of the timbers, and chicken wire on the inside - that will space the two fences about 3" - 4" apart. I'm hoping the double...

    No More Chicks!

We started out thinking we would get 6 or 7 babies. I now have 25. The last time I went to the feed store to pick up my EEs, I came home with 5 instead of 4. My SO didn't believe me when I told him I temporarily forgot how to count. My coop will hopefully be mostly done this weekend, and I...

    Groggy chick???

Isn't 100 degrees too high? Could she just be overheating? I thought new chicks were supposed to be in about 95 degrees, with a place to move away from the heat if they wanted to.

New to chicks - my guesses on breed seem right?

My intro is on the intro page, but I wanted to put some pics up and see if you knowledgeable people thought I was guessing right about what I picked up at the feed store. First the ones I know: my new EE chicks. I got them today and am guessing they are two or three days old. My others are...

    New to BYC and chickens

I need to post a message to the "I have a problem" thread tonight :-) and post pictures. My boyfriend decided he wanted some chickens so we could have/sell fresh eggs. I live on 5 acres, so after some debate, decided we could get "a few". Started off 3/24/10 with 6 pullets and 1 adorable roo...
