Beekissed, where did you order you good batch of CX from? We have a group right now that isn't growing well and I need to find another place to buy from. Thanks! :)
It's possible! I've been prepping to do the same and have read several great books on the subject. Here are my 2 favorites. Pastured Poultry Profits and You Can Farm
Well, I'm still finishing up my broilers and here in Indiana we've had snow, ice, 28 degree temps and freezing cold flooding. My CornishX have faired really well. We processed the first few later then we wanted because of Thanksgiving (8.5 weeks) and they were around 5.5 lbs dressed. I used a...
I think there is a profit to be made depending on how many you want to raise. We plan to do 300 next year and should make about 2,000 and that's after taking a portion for ourselves and accounting for loss. If we up that number to 750 birds we would profit about 6,000. We have 10 acres and run...
I just wanted to share what worked for us as far as our Pyrenees puppy. He was from good working lines, but was raised with minimal human contact and was very timid when we got him. We tamed him-well hard to stay timid with 4 kids loving on him all day. Around 4-5 months killed a chicken. I...
Thanks!
We did 5 CornishX yesterday by hand just to stock up on chicken and take care of the larger birds. I'll keep looking for a plucker, but in the meantime ordered the Whizbang instruction manual and the Kent fingers so we can make our own. I think we can gather up the rest of the parts...
I had a mother plucker lined up to rent today and the owner said the last guy who rented it hasn't returned it. Our birds are already 8.5 weeks and I can't wait much longer. If anyone in central IN has one they would be willing to rent, that would be AWESOME!
We just gathered about 5-6 gallons as well. I gave 2 gallons to family and froze the rest. After researching, it seems that they freeze quite well for up to a year. And there are tons of recipes out there if you get tired of roasted chestnuts.
Does anyone know where I could buy organic feed near Indy or on the southside? I'd love to switch my flock to organic, but so far haven't been able to locate any feed. Of course if I do switch I may have to sell some extras to keep the feed bill in check.
We live in Franklin and I came across a thread about a small company that sells organic feed in Lebanon, but that's just too far for me to drive to get feed-it would be a 3 hours round trip. Are there any sources in Indianapolis or near the southside? Thank you so much!
Yay! Thank you so much! I feel so much better now and we're excited to try our first batch of meat birds. Now to see if I can find someone that I can watch process chickens before I do if for the first time.
I decided I wanted to jump on the meat bird band wagon a little late in the year. I have an order placed for some red broilers, but they won't ship for 2 more weeks. I was wondering if I should cancel the order and wait until next spring. I didn't want to keep them confined although I do have...
